Agnes Scott Yields 0-2 Decision to Open the Regular Season

Greenville, S.C. — The Agnes Scott College (ASC) volleyball team opened the 2021 regular season with back to back losses on Friday evening in day one of the Bob Jones University Labor Day tournament in Greenville, South Carolina. The Scotties faced Columbia College (S.C.) to open the day yielding a 3-1 decision (25-13, 25-17, 21-25, 25-21). Wrapping up the day ASC faced host Bob Jones University with the Bruins coming away with a 3-0 victory (9-25, 19-25, 18-25). 

 

GAME 1: Agnes Scott (1), Columbia College (3)

Agnes Scott got off to a good start early on in the first set, but Columbia took a 8-1 lead on back to back attacking errors by Alex Roquemore. The Scotties would continue to battle pulling within seven (13-6) on a error by the Koalas. The Koalas would then cruise to take the 25-13 set win – its first on the young season.

 

The Koalas owned an 11-4 stand in the second frame, the Scotties cut the deficit to 10 midway but that would be the closest Agnes Scott got as Columbia pulled away with the 25-17 win.

 

ASC found themselves tying the game 5-all early in the third stanza to a service error by Columbia. Back to back service aces from first year Taylor Carnley (Opp, Alabama) gave the Scotties a 9-5 advantage. The Scotties would then grow its lead to 17-12 on a kill by Daisy Hooper. Two back to back service errors lifted Agnes Scott over Columbia 25-21 and Columbia taking a 2-1 lead heading into the fourth set.

 

The Koalas orchestrated a 9-7 lead in the fourth frame and never let up as the Scotties was unable to recover from the deficit. The Koalas capitalized on a attack error by the Scotties for the 25-21set win.

 

Summer Davis led the Scotties with eight (8) kills and seven (7) digs while Daisy Hooper aided seven (7) kills, two (2) assists and 11 stops.

 

 

GAME 1: Agnes Scott (0), Bob Jones University (3)

 

The Scotties returned back on the court to face host Bob Jones University to close out the evening.

In the opening set, the Bruins came out strong thanks to four-straight aces from Rachel Pattisall as the team led 5-0. BJU kept their momentum as their serve found holes in the Scotties' defense to lead 11-3. From there, the Bruins then cruised the remainder of the set with a 25-9 win.  

Agnes Scott bounced back at the beginning of set two as the score remained close early in the set. The Scotties took the lead from scoring four straight points as host BJU trailed 14-12. BJU battled back and closed out the set scoring six-straight points as they took set two 25-19. 

In set final set, Victoria Glaze and Kayla Oberstar each made kills for the Bruins early on to take a 6-2 lead. Agnes Scott fought back but the Bruins continued to keep the lead. Near the midway point of the set, a kill from Oberstar pushed the BJU lead to 17-12. Although the Scotties mounted one last rally, host BJU were able to take the 25-18 win in set three. 

Summer Davis and Taylor Carnley had six kills each in the match while Alex Roquemore finished with two. Carmen Ross, Daisy Hooper and Taylor Carnley finished the match with one ace a piece as the Scotties moved to 0-2 to begin the season. 

Next up, Agnes Scott will return to the court on Saturday morning for a matchup against Johnson University (Tenn.) at 10 a.m. The winner of the 10 a.m. contest will face host Bob Jones University at 12 p.m.
