DECATUR, Ga. - In a volleyball season that has been one filled with challenges and growth for Agnes Scott, Saturday marked the final home contest, where the team, fans and college community celebrated their lone senior on the squad,
Annie Van Der Heide.
Van Der Heide, who joined the Scotties their junior year, had one of the best days of their career at Agnes Scott in the tri-match with first place Asbury University and a powerful Belhaven squad. On the day, Van Der Heide amassed a team-leading 11 digs in the contests, being forced into back-row duty for the first time in their collegiate career due to injuries limiting the Scotties to six players in the contests.
In the opening contest, fittingly, the first point of the match was won by the Scotties on a kill by Van Der Heide, but Asbury proved to be far too strong for the Scotties, running away with the contest in three sets (25-3, 25-6, 25-6). Defending Collegiate Conference of the South Player of the Year, Isabelle VandeSchraaf, led the Eagles (16-7, 11-1 CCS) with 7 kills, while the Eagles hit for an incredible .528 for the match. For the Scotties, Van Der Heide would lead the way with 5 digs, 1 kill and 1 assist. Brenna Brooker and
Madison Stidum each contributed two kills, and Stidum matched Van Der Heide with 5 digs as well.
In the second contest, the Scotties (0-16, 0-13 CCS) were able to be more competitive with the Blazers (10-17, 5-8 CCS), as they fell in straight sets (25-8, 25-13, 25-12). Maya Beane came off the bench to lead all players with 9 kills for the Blazers. Stidum had a strong effort, finishing with 4 kills, 5 digs and 3 aces. Brooker once again contributed to the offense, amassing 3 kills and 3 digs. Setter
Paige Ford finished with 9 assists. One of the top statistics on the day, once again, was Van Der Heide, who led the team defensively with 6 digs. Due to only having 6 healthy players, Van Der Heide played across the back row for the first time. The 11 digs on the day were the first 11 digs of their entire career.
The Scotties will return to Collegiate Conference of the South play when they travel to Piedmont University on Tuesday, October 28, for a 7:00 pm contest against the Lions (6-23, 3-10 CCS).
