Scotties Drop Heartbreaker to Salem, 66-60

Box Score

DECATUR, Ga. - In a back and forth affair in their regular season finale, the Agnes Scott College basketball team gave all they had in a 66-60 loss to the Salem Spirits (7-16, 4-0 Great South Athletic Conference), who claimed the regular season conference title with the victory.

The first half of play saw several lead changes, as the Scotties (4-17, 2-2 GSAC) eked out a 1 point edge after one quarter, led by 8 points from season leader Laniqua Collins.  In the second quarter, the Spirits would open up a lead of as many as five points, before the half ended on two key baskets by Jakaria Fleming.  Trailing, 28-26, first-year Zoey Perchaluk drove into the paint and dished to Fleming, who sank a long 2-point basket to bring the game level.  As Salem brought the ball up the court to try to take the lead before halftime, Fleming pickpocketed the Salem player, and made a layup with :01 remaining on the clock to give the Scotties the halftime advantage, 30-28.

In the second half, the Spirits would quickly take the lead after a three pointer by Tamara Blanton. The Spirits would not relinquish the lead the rest of the way, but the Scotties hung around as the Spirits never led by more than 10 points in the second half.  In the end, foul trouble would haunt the Scotties, as they committed 23 infractions, compared to only 13 for the Spirits.

For the game, Collins would lead the Scotties with 19 points and 14 rebounds, while having to sit during several key stretches with foul trouble.  Fleming, who would repeat her second quarter heroics by stealing the ball at half court and making the layup to end the third quarter as well, finished with 13 points.  Jalexis Teemer finished with 11 points and 4 assists.  Salem was led by Quntashea Lewis, as the senior forward poured in 20 points and hauled in 11 rebounds.

The Scotties will await their seeding fate for the Great South Athletic Conference tournament, which will be held next weekend, February 26-28, on the campus of Salem College in Winston-Salem, N.C.
