DECATUR, Gs. - For most of the evening, Agnes Scott (2-16, 1-8 Collegiate Conference of the South) gave perennial powerhouse, Maryville (10-7, 6-3 CCS) all they could handle. The Scots used a 23-0 run in the first 7:25 of the third quarter to blow open a one-point game, finishing off the Scotties in a 72-51 victory.
The first half of play saw the Scottie fall behind early, as Maryville raced out to en 11-2 lead with 6:26 to play in the first quarter.
Kaycie Hyde and
Cybele Forbes scored the next 5 points to bring the Scotties back within 4, which is where they would end the quarter, trailing by a score of 15-11.
In the second quarter, Forbes and
Alex McElroy both had outstanding quarters for the Scotties. McElroy was sharp from behind the arc, draining two three-pointers in the quarter, while Forbes drove the lane several times and drew fouls on the Scots, sinking three free throws in the period. Her last two free throws came at the end of the half, bringing the Scotties within one, trailing 27-26 at halftime.
The Scots came out in the second half ready to go, and began their huge run, led by leading scorer Emily Wilson. The Scots shot 60% in the third quarter, including 50% from behind the arc. The Scotties, on the other hand, struggled to make their shots, and went scoreless for the first 8 minutes before
Lexxi Romero-Williams got the Scotties on the board with a layup, with the score 50-28 in favor of the Scots.
The fourth quarter was another close affair, with Maryville outscoring the Scotties, 19-17, for the final score of 72-51. Ella Haney led the victors with 19 points, while Kadence Stoner finished with a double-double, scoring 14 and pulling down 12 boards.
For the Scotties,
Alex McElroy led the way with 13 points. Forbes had a solid night before fouling out in the fourth. She finished with 12 points, 9 rebounds, 3 steals and 3 blocks.
Kaycie Hyde continued her strong freshman campaign as well, scoring 10.Â
The Scotties travel to Belhaven on Friday in a makeup contest from last week that was postponed due to weather.
