WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Agnes Scott College tennis team continued their recent hot streak, winning their fifth match in their last six outings, taking out Salem (5-6, 2-2 Great South Athletic Conference) to wrap up the GSAC Regular Season title, as they dominated the Spirits, winning 8-1.
The Scotties (8-8, 4-0 GSAC) easily swept the doubles matches at #1 doubles, as Taylor Lee and Maddie Hoffman finished a perfect 4-0 in conference doubles, overwhelming Andrea Akers and Deanna Wilkins, 8-1. Jumana Master and Magdalena Wimmler, playing together for the first time, also won in dominating fashion at #3 doubles, taking out Sabrina Sheikh and Jacquelyn Lockhart-Andretta, 8-2. The #2 doubles match was a back and forth affair, as Salem fought back from a 7-4 deficit to keep things close, but Nikki Langford and Camille Wilson capitalized on their fifth match point, finally ending the match, 8-6, in favor of the Scotties.
"We played really solid doubles today," commented head coach T.J. Greggs, "and I think that was a huge factor in the match today."
In singles, Hoffman and Langford decided the final outcome quickly, as they both rolled to fast wins, putting the match out of reach as the Scotties raced to an insurmountable 5-0 lead. At #1 singles, Hoffman took out Akers, 6-0, 6-1, and Langford followed with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Allie Watkins at #4 to wrap up the win. In a much-anticipated rematch of their match from a week ago, Taylor Lee defeated Deanna Wilkins at the #2 spot, 6-3, 6-3. It is the fifth time in two years that the two have faced each other, and Wilkins defeated Lee a week ago in three sets.
"This was a great win for Taylor," continued Greggs. "She played a very smart match, serving well and using her whole repertoire in the win. I was most impressed with how well she focused today and got the job done."
The Scotties' other two wins came from Wilson at #5, who took down Sheikh, 6-3, 6-3, and from Master, who used a consistent afternoon to force Lockhart-Andretta into several errors, winning 6-1, 6-0 at the #6 spot. Ashley Koehler would score the only win for the day for the Spirits, as she won a battle of consistency over Wimmler, winning 6-4, 6-3.
The Scotties will return to the court on Sunday, April 17, as they face off with Guilford College at noon. A year ago, the Scotties topped the Quakers, 9-0.
