HILTON HEAD, S.C. - Agnes Scott took a critical doubles point for the second-straight match, and it once again proved the difference, as they downed Stevenson (2-2) by a final score of 4-3 in their first action of the Spring Tennis Fest event in Hilton Head, South Carolina this afternoon.
The Scotties (2-2) quickly raced to big leads the #2 and #3 doubles positions, as the team of
Taylor Hendley and
Feliz Pearson blanked their Mustang opponents, 6-0, to put the Scotties in an advantageous position.
Sophia Dumitru-Rose and
Jasmine Ziller quickly put the Scotties on top with the doubles point, as they also took down Stevenson, 6-0, at the #3 position. For the second straight match, Stevenson's top pair was victorious, as Emma Clayton and Ariella Stepleman took our the #1 pair for Agnes Scott,
Kennadi Reese and
Katherine Cox, by a score of 6-1.
In the singles, the Mustangs picked up a forfeit win at the #6 position, as Ziller was limited to doubles due to injury. The Scotties quickly raced to big leads at #3 through #5, however, to put the match out of reach quickly. Cox, Pearson and Dumitru-Rose dropped only 5 games combined, as the Scotties were able to close out the match. Cox downed Rachel Lubovsky, 6-1, 6-0, while Pearson and Dumitru-Rose picked up identical 6-1, 6-1 wins at #4 and #5, respectively. Stepleman continued her strong season for the Mustangs, as she remained undefeated on the year, winning over Reese, 6-1, 6-0. The closest match of the day came at the #2 spot, where Emma Clayton fought off a valiant effort from
Taylor Hendley, winning 7-5, 6-2 to complete the match.Â
The Scotties will kick off their Collegiate Conference of the South schedule in Hilton Head, as they face off on Wednesday with defending CCS Conference Tournament champs, Asbury (6-3, 3-0 CCS), as both teams spend their Spring Breaks in Hilton Head. Match time is set for 2:00 p.m.
