DECATUR, Ga. - Agnes Scott (3-2-1) will open their Collegiate Conference of the South season on Saturday, after getting off to a hot start in the non-conference portion of the schedule. The Scotties have gone 3-0-1 in their last four games after tough losses against regional powerhouses Berry and Oglethorpe to start the season. Those two teams have combined for a 10-1-1 start this season, as Oglethorpe has taken out 5 CCS opponents to start the season.
The Tale of the Season So Far
Agnes Scott is off to their best start since the 2016 season, when the team started the season 4-1-1 in their first season in the USA South.  They have been led by their defensive stops, and accurate shot-making by the Scottie offense. On the season, the Scotties are firing with a .636 shot-on-goal accuracy, placing them in the Top 50 in the nation in that category. They have limited their opponents to a .408 shot accuracy with swarming defense led by current Collegiate Conference of the South Defensive Player of the Week,
Piper Martinsen, along with last week's recipient, goalkeeper
Olivia Rosario. Other key contributors on the defensive side of the field are first-year
Tigui Diallo,
Ashlee Parkey, and
Darcy Anderson. Rosario has played the majority of the minutes for the Scotties in goal, picking up the decision in all 6 contests, while also ranking in the Top 50 in NCAA Division III with 8.00 saves per game.
On the offensive side of things, the Scotties have done a great job of taking advantage of the scoring opportunities that they have created. Leading the way so far is graduate student and former Virginia State player,
Damaris Gaines, who leads the Scotties with 9 points on the season (4 goals, 1 assist). Senior midfielder
Iris Ray is next with 6 points (2 goals, 2 assists), including the game-winner in the Scotties' last contest against Wesleyan.
Maahla Fofack has contributed 3 points off the bench for the Scotties (1 goal, 1 assist), while Martinsen has 3 (1 goal, 1 assist),
Laura Damonte has 2 (1 goal), and
Jonah Wood added an assist in the win over Regent.
The Matchup
LaGrange is a very familiar opponent for the Scotties, having joined them throughout their histories in the GSAC, USA South and now here in the CCS. LaGrange leads the all-time series, 23-8-5. It has been a series of streaks, as LaGrange has pulled out wins in the last 5 contests, after going winless against the Scotties in the previous 7 attempts.Â
This season, the two teams share several common opponents. Berry and Oglethorpe both picked up wins against both squads, but Warren Wilson and LaGrange played to a 0-0 stalemate on the Owls' campus, while Agnes Scott had their most prolific offensive output against Warren Wilson, handing them a 4-2 loss on the road. LaGrange has been outscored, 19-4 for the season, while Agnes Scott trails their opponents by a 13-10 margin in scoring.
Kickoff for the contest is at 5:00 p.m. at Gellerstedt Field on the campus of Agnes Scott College. Admission is free to the public. Â
