DECATUR, Ga. - Before people had even settled into their seats for the afternoon,
Piper Martinsen gave the home team a lead they would never relinquish, as she scored off of the second pass of the game from
Iris Ray, 9 seconds into the contest, to help lead the Scotties to the 2-1 win over Regent (1-4).
In a game that was about as even as possible in all statistical categories, the early goal from Martinsen proved the difference. Regent University would even things up after they drew a penalty in the box and were awarded a penalty kick, which Marissa Crawley converted in the first half to even things up at 1-1 heading into halftime. The leading scorer for the Scotties this season,
Damaris Gaines, made sure to get the Scotties back in front as she fought her way through the Regent defense to open the second half, and quickly took a feed from
Jonah Wood to drive home a shot from the top of the box, giving the Scotties the game-winner.
In goal for the Scotties,
Olivia Rosario continued the strong start to her season, making 7 saves on the day. Also aiding in the strong defensive effort were outstanding performances from
Tigui Diallo, Ashlee Parkey, Martinsen, and
Darcy Anderson, who stifled the Royals' offense throughout with key clearouts. Offensively,
Laura Damonte had four shots, including one on target, while other Scoties registering shots were Gaines with 6 shots (4 on target),
Iris Ray with 2 shots, and
Isha Patel with a single shot on goal in her Scottie debut.
The Scotties will return to the pitch next Wednesday, September 17, as they host Wesleyan College at 5:00 p.m. While Wesleyan is a Collegiate Conference of the South opponent, next week's contest will not count toward the season standings, as the regularly scheduled match against Wesleyan on the conference schedule will take place in Macon on the following Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
