Clutch Double Clinches Split with Wolves

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

DECATUR, Ga.—Junior KayLeigh Fitzgerald (Dalton, Ga.) delivered a big hit when the Scotties needed it most as a double in the bottom of the eighth plated two runs to beat Wesleyan College 5-4 in game two of a USA South Conference series. The Wolves took game one handily 11-1 in five innings.

Agnes Scott's captain walked into the batter's box with the Scotties down to their final out of the game and a runner on every base. For a Scottie program yearning for a clutch moment during a six-game losing streak, Fitzgerald was a natural selection to break the luck back in their favor.

Fitzgerald calmly shook off a foul tip on the first pitch and sent the next one screaming past the shift between first and second, rolling the ball all the way to the fence in centerfield. Caitlyn Weaver (Jacksonville, Fla.) trotted in from third with ease before turning to wave in Kat Fernandez (Humble, Texas) who tore around third base with a reckless abandon. The Scotties could feel a celebration impending as Fernandez gave a big jump onto home plate to clinch a comeback victory for the home side.

More importantly, it gave the Scotties (3-7) a glimpse of their early-season mojo.

Not much went right for the home team in the opener. After a nice celebration of Weaver—the team's lone senior—before the game, Agnes Scott let the Wolves score in every inning of a five-inning contest. A few defensive oversights gifted the Wolves five of their conference-high 11 runs, but it was Wesleyan's 13 hits that really created issues. The top four of the visitor's lineup contributed seven hits, six RBI, and left only one runner on base in 10 trips to help pace a dominant effort.

Wesleyan's Kimberly Dick (Tampa, Fla.) was particularly strong in the circle, surrendering only one earned run—an RBI single by Anyla Fulton (Ellenwood, Ga.)—and sending down six Scotties on strikes.

The Scottie offense never got going either, with only Fulton and Fitzgerald getting into scoring position one time during the five frames.

Wesleyan started game two where they left off with Presly Edwards (Cartersville, Ga.) singling in a run in the top of the second.

However, the Scotties began to change the conversation a bit in the bottom half of the same inning. Weaver doubled to the game in left-center with one out before Ashley Mabrey (Mt. Dora, Fla.) singled and stole second to put two runners in scoring position. Fernandez obliged with a single to right to score one before Sarah Fox (Cartersville, Ga.) looped a double down the right-field line to give Agnes its first lead of the afternoon.

A pitching change led to the Wolves getting out of the threat without any further damage.

The Scotties' slim lead lasted until the bottom of the fifth when they tacked on another with an RBI single by Weaver up the middle of the diamond.

Weaver, the Scottie starter, was seemingly in cruise control through five innings and looked well on her way to a dominant performance when Lauran Allbritton (Nahunta, Ga.) changed the game with one swing of the bat. After a leadoff single, Allbritton parked a pitch over the wall in left field to knot the game at three.

A tie game remained into extras where Wesleyan (7-15) scored a run on the second pitch of the inning on a Scottie error. Weaver was able to pitch out of the rest of the inning without giving up anything more.

The Scotties loaded the bases with only one out in the bottom of the eighth. Wesleyan starter Bailey Caldwell (Macon, Ga.) got Agnes Scott's leadoff Fulton to slap into a shallow fly to bring the Scotties to the brink of a sweep.

Fitzgerald rewrote the story with a magical moment just two pitches later.

Weaver saved her best game for senior day, registering her first multi-hit game and pitching victory of the season. Caldwell dipped to 4-8 on the year for the Wolves.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow in Macon for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
