Scotties Celebrate Good Friday With Sweep

Offense explodes in Game 1; Greenwood shuts down Wolves in Game 2

MACON, Ga. - Everyone on the Scottie roster did their part on Good Friday, and the softball team was rewarded with their first sweep of the season, defeating Wesleyan by scores of 14-5 and 3-2 on Friday in Macon, Ga. Taylor Selby continued to lead the Scotties offensively, finishing 5-for-7 with 2 RBIs and 2 walks batting leadoff.

In Game 1, the runs came early and often for the Scotties (3-11, 2-8 Collegiate Conference of the South), as they plated 3 runs in the 1st, and 7 more in the 2nd inning to race to a 10-0 lead.

In the first inning, Selby led off the game with a walk, and proceeded to pick up another steal for the season. Kaylee Hickman drove her home with a bunt to the pitcher. Kyra Hornsby then reached base on an error by the Wolves (4-24, 0-10 CCS), scoring Hickman. Mariana Serment-Alvarez picked up her first collegiate RBI with a drawn walk with bases loaded to give the Scotties their third run of the inning.

The real fireworks happened in the second inning, as the Scotties rallied for seven unanswered runs with two outs. The Wolves had the third out, seemingly, on two separate occasions, but a dropped third strike allowed Ellie Settle to reach base, and a missed tag off of a dribbler from Natalie Bains down third base line with the bases loaded allowed Kyra Hornsby to score to begin the rally. Bryn Greenwood would follow up with a bases-clearing double to center field which would score Bains, Kenzie Beaudoin, and Settle. Serment-Alvarez continued her strong game with a blooper to left field that scored Greenwood. Jada Howard would single to left to move Serment-Alvarez to second, before Taylor Selby once again came up big, tripling to left field and scoring Howard and Serment-Alvarez, giving the Scotties the 10-0 edge.

In Game 1, seven Scottie batters would log 2 or more hits in the contest, including Selby (3-for-4, 1 BB, 2 RBIs), Settle (2-for-5, 3 runs), Beaudoin (2-for-2, 2 BB, 2 RBIs), Bains (2-for-5, 1 run, 1 RBI), Greenwood (2-for-5, 4 RBIs, 1 run), Serment-Alvarez (2-for-4, 2 RBIs, 1 BB), and Howard (2-for-5). All in all, the Scotties would rip 17 hits and every batter achieved at least one hit.

On the mound, Kyra Hornsby picked up the win, going 1.2 innings for the Scotties as they built a 10-0 advantage. Kaylee Hickman was exceptional in relief, throwing the final 5.1 innings and allowing only 2 hits, 2 walks, and striking out 3.

Game 2 was in stark contrast to Game 1, as offenses quieted and defense was the difference-maker in the contest. Greenwood had one of her strongest outings of the season, pitching a complete game while scattering 7 hits, 1 walk, and logging one strikeout. Savannah Wren was the tough-luck loser for the Wolves, as she also pitched a complete game, allowing 9 hits and 2 earned runs in the loss.

The Scotties got on the board first in the top of the first inning, as the Wolves had a costly error trying to pick off Kyra Hornsby at first base. The throw went over the head of the player at first base, and Kaylee Hickman was able to score from third base to give the Scotties the early advantage. The Wolves would take the lead for the first time on the day, as they scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning, giving them a narrow, 2-1, advantage.

Agnes Scott was able to get things even in the top of the fifth, as Greenwood helped her own cause with a double to center field which scored Ellie Settle from third for the 2-2 tie. In the next inning, the Scotties would score the final run of the afternoon as Kyra Hornsby laid down a sacrifice bunt with Selby on third base to score the sophomore, who narrowly beat out the throw from first base.

Things would get interesting in the bottom of the 7th, but strong defense from the Scotties got them out of a bases-loaded, 0 out situation, Jada Howard, Kenzie Beaudoin and Kyra Hornsby combined for a 5-2-3 double play to give the Wolves two outs, before Greenwood forced Haley Blankenship into grounding out to Hornsby to end the contest.

Selby, Hornsby and Settle all had two hits for the Scotties, and Greenwood and Hornsby logged RBIs in the contest.

The Scotties will use the momentum from this win to try to work their way back into the playoff hunt, as they head into next weekend with two important double headers on the road. On Friday, April 10, they face off with Asbury (13-11, 3-3 CCS) and follow that with an April 11 twin bill with Maryville (19-13, 4-4).
