DECATUR, Ga. - There was plenty to cheer about on Saturday, but, in the end, the Agnes Scott softball team left the field still looking for their first Collegiate Conference of the South win of the season. The Scotties fell to LaGrange (9-17, 4-2 CCS) by scores of 7-4 and 4-2 to drop to 1-11 overall, and 0-8 in the CCS.
Taylor Selby was the story of the day for the Scotties offensively, as she had multiple hits in both contests.
Game 1 Recap:
In Game 1, the Scotties and Panthers each had offensive spurts throughout the contest. The Panthers led off the scoring in the top of the 2nd on a short sacrifice fly which scores Hannah Barnett, giving them the 1-0 lead. The Scotties would answer in the bottom of the inning to even things out, as
Natalie Bains singled to left field, scoring
Ellie Settle from third.
The third inning saw the Scotties pull ahead for the first time in a conference game this season, as pitcher
Kyra Hornsby singled to center field, scoring Selby from second base. Settle would factor into the scoring again as she singled to right to bring in Hornsby from second, giving the Scotties a 3-1 lead heading into the top of the 4th. The Scotties recorded two quick outs before the Panthers rallied for two runs of their own, as Cannon Ramsey scored her teammates from 2nd and 3rd bases on a single to left center, evening the score at 3-3.
LaGrange would tack on two more runs in the top of the fifth, before the Scotties would close the gap to a single run, as Kaylee HIckman hit a sacrifice fly to center field that scored
Jada Howard from third. LaGrange added two more in the top of the seventh to stretch the lead to three, but there was no comeback for the Scotties as the Panthers had a perfect inning in the field and retired the Scottie side to end the game.
Kyra Hornsby (0-4, 11.62 ERA) took the loss on the mound for the Scotties, pitching a complete game with one strikeout and only one walk. Maddie Chauvin pitched 2.1 innings in the middle of the contest for the Panthers, and picked up the win after allowing 1 hit and 1 earned run.
At the plate for the Scotties,
Taylor Selby finished 3-for-4 with a run scored, and Settle finished 2-for-4 at the plate.
Game 2 Recap:
Agnes Scott once again jumped out to an early lead in the second game of the double header, as Selby singled down left field line in the bottom of the second inning, scoring
Kenzie Beaudoin. The Panthers would regain the lead in the top of the third, though, as Hannah Barnett picked up an RBI off of a groundout, scoring Kayla Helms from third base. LaGrange added another run in the inning when Claire Chamberlain reached first on an error, allowing Cannon Ramsey to score from third.
Agnes Scott would get the game back even at 2-2 in the bottom half of the third inning, as
Lia Faulks picked up an RBI with a single up the middle, scoring Settle from third. A defensive battle ensued through the next three innings as both teams had chances to score but strong defensive efforts stifled any attempts at scoring. It looked like extra innings were a possibility in the seventh inning, but LaGrange once again scored with two outs, as Chamberlain picked up two RBIs on a single that scored Ramsey and Helms. That gave the Panthers a 4-2 lead entering the bottom half of the inning.
The Scotties made their best attempt at a rally, as Selby once again singled for the Scotties, followed by a bunt single by Hickman which gave the Scotties runnners on first and second with no outs. Unfortunately for the home team, LaGrange was once again able to end the potential rally, as the next three batters all hit into outs to end the game and the series.
Five Scotties collected hits in the game, including Selby's 2-for-4 performance. The Scotties stranded 9 runners in the contest.
Bryn Greenwood went the distance for the tough-luck loss, scattering 11 hits, with 3 earned runs, and 3 strikeouts against no walks.
The Scotties will take the momentum from these contests as they head on the road for the next few sets of games in the CCS. Their next contest is a road contest againt Wesleyan (4-21, 0-8 CCS), playing in their final season in the CCS. The two teams have faced off 80 times in the 2000s. The Scotties have won eight straight against the Wolves, dating back to the 2023 season.
