Scotties Drop Home Opener Despite Career Showings

Box Score

DECATUR, Ga.—A season-best effort on the scoreboard was not enough as visiting Wesleyan College used a strong third quarter to push past Agnes Scott 65-47 on Friday night at Woodruff Gymnasium.

Playing in its strangely quiet home gym for the first time in nearly a year, Agnes Scott (0-5, 0-5 USA South) played the Wolves tightly throughout the first half. After Wesleyan (1-0, 1-0 USA South) jumped out to the early 5-0 lead in the opening minutes, Agnes Scott battled back with a five-point run of its own to knot the game.

Once again the Wolves pushed its lead out to five points only to see the Scotties score four consecutive points to close out the first quarter.

Agnes Scott took its first lead of the game just 11 seconds in the second frame when Jasmine Thompson (Chicago, Ill.) drove to the basket and got fouled. Thompson made both attempts at the charity stripe for an 11-10 advantage, which held for nearly three minutes of game action.

Jamila Ra-Hashim made a layup to briefly put the Wolves back on top, but Agnes junior Shay Sweat (Lawrenceville, Ga.) was not about to let that stand. The combo guard pulled up in transition on the next possession and nailed her first triple of the game over the outstretched hand of a defender.

Agnes Scott led 19-17 late in the second quarter after Thompson hit a three-pointer but Wesleyan used a 7-2 surge over the final two minutes to take a 24-21 halftime advantage.

Wesleyan came out firing on offense after the halftime break, a 10-minute stretch that ultimately proved to be the difference-maker on the final scoreboard. The Wolves outscored the Scotties 31-14 in the period, shooting a blistering 59.1 percent from the field. Much of the Wolves offense came on second-chance opportunities as the visitors outrebounded Agnes Scott 13-6 to help take a commanding 55-35 lead after three.

The Scotties were able to creep back within 16 points but no closer as the Wolves closed things out.

Ra-Hashim led all scorers with 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting, while Ahnila Owens totaled 16 points, five rebounds, and four assists. Tyshia Hughes paced the Wolves rebounding effort with 10 boards.

Several Scotties put together season-high efforts on both ends of the floor. Sweat looked like the player that ended the 2019-20 season on a tear, scoring a career-best 14 points. The junior captain also corralled seven rebounds and dished out a game-high five assists. Sweat's previous high was 13 during her first season in Decatur.

Thompson broke out in a big way, scoring 10 points after scoring no more than four in the Scotties' previous four games. The sophomore also grabbed seven rebounds. Erika McLeod (Snellville, Ga.) became the latest Scottie to earn a double-double with 10 points while leading all players with 12 rebounds. Junior Chloe Perry (Atlanta, Ga.) also put together a career-best effort on offense with eight points and two assists.

The two programs will meet up in Decatur again on Saturday for a 2 p.m. tip.
