Box Score DECATUR, Ga.—Garis Grant (Charleston, S.C.) turned in a second consecutive big game, but Brevard women's basketball was able to break open a one-possession game in the final minute and a half to beat the Scotties in their home finale 51-41 on Friday night. Fresh off her first career triple-double, Grant posted another impressive showing finishing with 16 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks.
The Scotties (0-23) played one of their grittiest games of the season, holding an opponent to a season-low 51 points despite a rotation of only six players. Brevard was never able to break through the Scotties' zone defense in the half-court, shooting only 29.2 percent from the floor and making only four of 21 shots from deep.
Agnes Scott started the game with one of its slowest starts to the season, being outscored 12-3 in the first period by the visiting Tornados. Grant was able to get more looks in the second quarter and consistently got underneath the Brevard defense to create mismatches at the rim or on the kickout.
The Scottie offense picked up in a big way in response. Agnes Scott bested the Tornados 14-11 in the second period to trim the deficit to 23-17 at halftime.
Agnes Scott continued to hang around in the second half, never letting Brevard get its lead above nine points in the third quarter. However, Brevard's slight 14-12 third allowed them to take a three-possession advantage into the final 10 minutes.
With just under nine minutes remaining in regulation and trailing 39-31, Agnes Scott made its strong move of the game to climb back into contention. The Scotties went on a 10-3 run to bring the game back within a point at 42-41.
In an unfortunate twist, Agnes Scott was unable to score another point for the remaining 3:24 in the game and Brevard did enough on offense to pull away late.
Ty'She Washington scored 13 points, while Destiny Williams added 12 in similar shooting performances. The Tornados totaled 18 steals on the evening and scored 28 points off 31 Agnes Scott turnovers.
Addison Harrison (Ellenwood, Ga.) and Emma Olson (Austin, Texas) each added seven points for Agnes Scott.
With five blocks, Grant passed Birmingham-Southern's Emilee Olsen for fourth on the active career leaders in NCAA Division III.
The Scotties conclude their season with conference games at Wesleyan on Wednesday and at Maryville next Saturday.
