Box Score 2 DECATUR, Ga.—A furious seventh-inning comeback fell just short as Agnes Scott softball dropped a pair of games to NAIA opponent Point University on Sunday under the lights. The Skyhawks produced a big inning at the end of both games to beat the Scotties 7-2 and 12-10 at Oakhurst Park.
Agnes Scott (2-4) and Point (3-6) will meet each other again on Wednesday in West Point, Georgia for the second of a home-and-home.
Game One
KayLeigh Fitzgerald (Dalton, Ga.) continued a strong weekend with a leadoff triple in the second inning before eventually scoring on a sacrifice bunt by Kat Fernandez (Humble, Texas) to give the Scotties an early lead.
The Scotties held onto the slim margin until the sixth inning despite not registering another hit on offense following the triple. Kayla Spinks (Social Circle, Ga.) was able to get outs when it mattered in each of the first five innings to keep the Skyhawks off the scoreboard.
Point finally broke through in the top of the sixth, tacking seven runs on the board on five hits. A previously clean defensive effort for Agnes Scott was tainted with three errors in the frame to keep the Skyhawks lineup moving along.
It was the only inning Point would score in during game one, but Agnes Scott was only able to add more run over the final two frames.
The Skyhawks outhit Agnes Scott 13-4 for the game with Angela Heimback leading the way with three hits.
Game Two
Fitzgerald gave the Scotties an early advantage once again with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first.
Point responded as they did in the first game, but with a more consistent offense. The Skyhawks scored five between the second and third innings, two of which came directly off Scottie defensive miscues.
The Skyhawks held a 6-3 lead heading into the seventh when all chaos broke loose. Point hung six runs on the board to all but end any thoughts of a come-from-behind triumph for the home side, but Agnes Scott was about to make things very interesting.
The first seven Scotties to take a bat in the bottom of the seventh all reached base safely and scored to make it a 12-10 game. Fernandez got the scoring started with a bases-clearing triple to the wall in center and Jani Howington (Lawrenceville, Ga.) capped it off with a crowd-raising three-run jack to left center.
Game one winner, turned reliever Allie Beilstein was able to get three of the final four Scotties to record outs to close out a wild game.
