Box Score 2 DECATUR, Ga.—A special day at Agnes Scott College got even sweeter as softball rumbled past visiting Sewanee for a doubleheader sweep on Saturday afternoon. The Scotties saw the power bats activated all day long, beating the Tigers 9-1 in game one before holding on for a 10-6 victory in the nightcap.
Agnes Scott moves to .500 on the season at 2-2, while Sewanee falls to 2-6 to begin the year.
Game One
Sewanee got the day started with a run in the top of the second when Kendell Goodrum singled in Michaela Walker with two outs in the inning. However, that would be the final time the Tigers would cross the plate in the contest.
Agnes Scott answered right back in the bottom half of the frame with two runs. The Scotties tied the game on an Ashley Mabrey (Mt. Dora, Fla.) single before Alexei Young (McDonough, Ga.) plated Emma Thomas (Navarre, Fla.) with a double smacked inside the bag at third base.
The Scotties really broke the game open in the next inning. KayLeigh Fitzgerald (Dalton, Ga.) remained red-hot at the plate with an RBI single to center before Jani Howington (Lawrenceville, Ga.) launched a three-run jack over the tall wall in left field for a 6-1 advantage.
Both offenses went quiet in the middle stages as Kayla Spinks (Social Circle, Ga.) and the Scottie defense teamed up to have a relatively clean game in the field.
Agnes Scott put the cherry on top of a dominant performance in the sixth with run-scoring singles from Sarah Fox (Cartersville, Ga.), Thomas and Fitzgerald to end the game effectively by run-rule.
Fitzgerald and Thomas combined to go 7-for-7 at the dish with two RBI and four runs scored. Thomas was also pivotal in a nicely timed double play on a lineout to end a Sewanee scoring threat.
Spinks got the win, allowing only four hits and striking out three Tigers.
Game Two
Sewanee attempted to sock the Scotties in the mouth right out of the gate. Two of the first three Tigers reached base safely before Sarah Wright placed a one-out shot over the wall in left to give Sewanee a 3-0 lead early.
After Dash Acker (Sugar Hill, Ga.) was able to pitch out of any further trouble, Fitzgerald obliged with a two-run bomb of her own in the bottom of the first to shred Sewanee's lead to a single run.
The Tigers added one back in the top of the second only to see the Scotties tack on three more in the bottom half to take their first lead of the game. Acker, who earned a collegiate win in the circle for the first time, helped her cause with sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the inning before Fox plated two more with a single to the gap in left-center.
Agnes Scott first-year Sidney Strama (Bartlett, Ill.) was able to pitch out of trouble in each of the next three innings to put the Scotties in position for a sweep.
Michaela Dailey (Smiths Station, Ala.) made that more of a reality in the bottom of the sixth with a double to the wall in dead center to make it an 8-4 game. The Scotties scored twice more in the inning on a throwing error by the Sewanee shortstop.
The Sewanee offense made Strama work a bit in the top of the seventh, scoring twice. However, the first-year pitcher was able to pitch to contact and trust her defense in the late stages of the inning to preserve a 10-6 victory.
Agnes Scott's offense was nearly as sharp as it was in the series opener, totaling 10 runs on 14 hits compared to a 15-hit performance in game one. Fitzgerald added two more hits and RBI to her day's total.
Series Domination
The Scotties are riding a seven-game win streak against Sewanee dating back to the 2012 season. Overall the Scotties have bested the Tigers 47-20 over the last three doubleheaders.
Big-Time Hitting
Dating back to the mid-point of last season, Fitzgerald, a sophomore, has been one of the most torrid hitters in the region. A four-game stretch of nine hits is just short of the 10 she hit in a four-game streak toward the end of 2019. She led the team last season with 31 hits and four home runs.
Thus far, Fitzgerald is hitting at a .643 clip with seven RBI.
What's Next?
Agnes Scott is right back in action on Sunday evening as the Scotties host Point University for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. The games are a make-up after a rainout on Friday afternoon.
