Box Score 2 GAINESVILLE, Ga.—Brenau University downed Agnes Scott in non-conference softball action on Saturday afternoon, using a late comeback to win game one 6-4 before warming up the offense in a 9-1 game two victory.
Agnes Scott's (0-2) Sunday doubleheader with LaGrange was postponed due to rain and was rescheduled for Wednesday, February 19 beginning at 3 p.m.
Game One
Agnes Scott used three consecutive walks to start the top half of the first frame to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Sophomore catcher KayLeigh Fitzgerald (Dalton, Ga.) made the Golden Tigers pay with a no-out, two-RBI double to dead center to drive in Kat Fernandez (Humble, Texas) and Valerie Rivas (Nashville, Tenn.) from second and third. Michaela Dailey (Smiths Station, Ala.) scored the third run of the inning on a ground ball.
The Golden Tigers grabbed a run back with a RBI single by Faith Grooms, but Brenau left two runners in scoring position as Kayla Spinks (Social Circle, Ga.) was able to pitch out of trouble.
The Scotties extended their lead back to three runs in the top of the third with a single by sophomore Emma Thomas (Navarre, Fla.) to score Alexei Young (McDonough, Ga.).
After crossing the plate one time in the third to make it a 4-2 game, Brenau broke through for the two equalizing runs in the bottom of the fifth off a double from Autumn Conaway.
The score remained 4-4 until the bottom of the next inning when Grooms put the Scotties away for good with a two-out double that plated Karly Smith and Kasey Blair from scoring position.
Brenau reliever Cameron Dillard struck out the side in the seventh to secure the Golden Tigers first win of 2020.
Game Two
The Golden Tigers carried its offensive charge into the second half of the twinbill, posting three runs on the board in the first to put the Scotties in an early hole.
Fitzgerald, who led the Scotties with three hits on the afternoon, punched in a run in the top of the third with a single to center field.
Brenau put the pressure on the Scotties with three more runs in each of the third and fourth stanzas to put run-rule into effect. Agnes Scott left seven runners on base, holding its offense to only one run in the second game.
The top half of Brenau's offense was stellar all day as Morgan Tyler, Maygan Loparo and Grooms all totaled four hits between the two games. Grooms also drove in five runs.
