Scotties Shut Down Wolves to Claim 54-47 Triumph

Box Score

MACON, Ga.—Four zeroes and a buzzer prompted a range of emotions for the Agnes Scott women's basketball team on an unseasonably warm Wednesday in middle Georgia. As the bench ran onto the court to meet the final five Scotties in the game, one player pumped their fists in the air twice, while another still, stared up at the scoreboard with a sense of relief.

Agnes Scott 54 and Wesleyan 47. Final.

For the Scotties it represented its first victory in a topsy-turvy 2019-2020 season, but more importantly, a sign of a team unwilling to quit amidst adversity.

Three weeks ago the Scotties relinquished a sizable lead against the Wolves at Woodruff Gymnasium, giving up a 24-11 run in the fourth to fall by two possessions. On Wednesday the Scotties were in control late into the game but finished off a pesky Wesleyan for good this time around.

The Scotties shot a season-best 40-percent from the field and received a third-consecutive monster game from senior forward Garis Grant (Charleston, S.C.). After averaging nearly a triple-double in two games last week, Grant continued her strong play with 18 points, 21 rebounds and four blocks in almost a full game of work.

Grant had secured a double-double by halftime as the Scotties methodically built up a six-point halftime lead. Several other Scotties got into a rhythm in the second half, including an impressive final 20 minutes from reserve forward Musumaulai Galoia (Hephzibah, Ga.) who finished with nine points and 11 rebounds.

Agnes Scott led 41-30 entering the final 10 minutes, but Wesleyan was not about to go away quietly. The Wolves turned up the pressure, forcing Agnes Scott into a game-high 11 turnovers in the fourth. Despite giving themselves several opportunities to turn the game around, Kamiyla Lane's (Atlanta, Ga.) made a layup off a Grant offensive rebound stopped Wesleyan for good with just under two minutes to go.

The Scotties (1-23, 1-14 USA South) held the Wolves to a single made free throw in the final two minutes to preserve their first victory of the season.

Natera Perkins scored a team-high 14 for the Wolves, while Ashanty Hightower chipped in 10 points.

Addison Harrison (Ellenwood, Ga.) ended up with nine points and a career-high six assists for the Scotties.

Agnes Scott closes out its season on Saturday at Maryville College in Maryville, Tennessee.
