Box Score DECATUR, Ga.—Maryville women's basketball overcame a slow start to spoil Agnes Scott College's senior day festivities 82-46 at the Woodruff Gymnasium on Saturday. Agnes Scott senior Garis Grant (Charleston, S.C.) had a big game with 17 points, six rebounds and four blocks, but Maryville's defensive pressure increased as the game wore on to give the Scots a possession advantage.
The Scots improve to 15-6 overall and 8-4 in the USA South while Agnes Scott falls to 0-21 and 0-12 respectively.
The first quarter was all Scotties as an upbeat Agnes Scott squad used the festive mood to its advantage with a 20-14 start. The Scotties seemingly could not miss from the floor, as Grant scored 10 of her 17 points in the opening 10 minutes of action on an efficient 5-of-6 shoot performance.
Maryville changed defensive strategies with the Scotties up 26-21 in the middle of the second quarter and began to force turnovers in bunches with a full-court trap. The Scots used a 14-0 run in fewer than two minutes to turn the game momentum around completely.
The Scots led 41-29 at halftime, using a 20-1 spree as junior Klaire Varney (Crossville, Tenn.) started to flex on both sides of the floor. Varney finished with a game-high 19 points and just missed a triple-double with 10 steals and nine assists.
Maryville captured momentum for good in the third quarter with a 19-7 period and held the Scotties to only 17 points in the second half. Four different Scots finished with at least 15 points.
Emma Olson (Austin, Texas) has a strong second half for the Scotties and ended up with 13 points and four rebounds in 38 minutes of action.
Grant will enter Tuesday's game with LaGrange tied for the all-time program lead in rebounds with Genefine Sapateh at 866. The senior forward already owns the career mark for blocks by a wide margin and is second in program history in points scored.
The Scotties honored Annie Weimerskirch (Murfreesboro, Tenn.), Kamiyla Lane (Atlanta, Ga.) and Grant before the game in thanks to their four years as a part of the women's basketball program at Agnes Scott.
