Box Score DECATUR, Ga.—Berea's extensive offensive streaks were too much for Agnes Scott women's basketball to handle in an 81-44 loss at the Woodruff Gymnasium on Saturday, December 7. The Scotties withstood an early run from the Mountaineers, but Berea's 18-0 run to end the first half turned the game for good. Berea improves to 6-2 on the season and 1-0 in the USA South Conference. Agnes Scott sees its record fall to 0-8 and 0-2.
Offensive rebounds for the story of the game. While it seemed like the Mountaineers were hitting every shot in sight, it was actually their second-chance opportunities that spelled the end for the home team. Berea outrebounded Agnes Scott 56-33 for the game and totaled nearly as many offensive rebounds (31) as the Scotties finished with in total.
Berea senior Briana Lanham was a thorn in the side of the Scottie defense, grabbing 11 offensive boards and 14 overall. Conversely, Agnes Scott grabbed only six offensive rebounds as a team, many of which came in the fourth quarter.
The Mountaineers raced out to a 21-5 lead in the first six minutes of action and held Agnes Scott to only one shot attempt from the field through five minutes compared to seven turnovers for the Scotties.
However, Agnes Scott rebounded in a big way during the changeover of the first and second quarters, displaying their most complete 10 minutes of basketball during the 2019-20 campaign to date. The offense flowed nicely as Agnes Scott's confidence to break the Berea full-court pressure became apparent. Kalin Smith (Kiln, Miss.) and Annie Weimerskirch (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) each knocked down big threes to pump up the home crowd, allowing Agnes Scott to creep back within seven points at 31-24.
From there though the game became controlled by the Mountaineers. Berea made six consecutive free throws to go back up double digits and ended the final 3:38 of the first half on an 18-0 run.
That run continued well into the second half as the Mountaineers outscored the Scotties 20-6 in the third quarter to put the game away for good.
Agnes Scott marginally finished with a better shooting percentage from the floor, but Berea's 31 offensive boards turned into an 83-47 shot advantage for the game. The Scotties made a season-high eight shots from deep, going 8-of-18.
Three Mountaineers finished in double figures, led by first-year Aaliyah Hampton with 15. Destiny Combs scored 12, while Lanham finished with 14.
The Scotties were led by Emma Olson (Austin, Texas) with 10 and Weimerskirch with nine. Addison Harrison (Ellenwood, Ga.) and Smith both chipped in eight. Garis Grant (Charleston, S.C.) was limited to only two points but still wrangled in 12 rebounds to pace the Scottie effort.
Agnes Scott hosts Emory on Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. The Eagles (6-2) enter the game receiving votes in the national top 25 poll.
