Box Score DECATUR, Ga.—A short-handed Agnes Scott women's basketball program did all it could to slow down the red hot Huntingdon Hawks before falling 64-37 in USA South action on Wednesday evening. The Hawks took a while to get going fresh off an impressive back-to-back sweep of Maryville and Piedmont last weekend, but eventually settled into a groove in the second half to pull away.
The Scotties fall to 0-10 on the season and 0-3 in the USA South. Huntingdon sports a 4-6 mark overall, but impressively moves to 4-0 in conference play this winter.
Agnes Scott jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first few minutes of action, forcing Huntingdon into tough shots with its zone defense. Unhappy with early play, Huntingdon called a timeout to get things turned around the trick worked to jumpstart the offense. The Hawks score 12 consecutive points in a three-minute span and never trailed again in the contest.
After Huntingdon pushed its lead to double digits, Agnes Scott was able to creep back within eight off a corner three from Emma Olson (Austin, Texas). However, the Hawks scored five consecutive points in the final minute including a tough-to-swallow foul on a three-pointer with .1 left on the clock. Indya Lawrence made all three attempts for the Hawks to turn a 24-14 halftime lead into 27-14.
Huntingdon gained steamed as the game progressed, scoring a game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter to take firm control against a Scottie side with only seven dressed. The Hawks persistent pressure and wholesale subs kept them fresh and ready for easy buckets in transition as the game wore on.
Ry Whetstone led the Hawks with 16 points and 10 rebounds in 30 minutes of action. Lawrence also had a strong day with 10 points, four rebounds and three assists.
Olson tied Whetstone as the points leader in the contest with 16 points on an efficient 5-of-6 shooting night. The sophomore forward also contributed eight rebounds and three steals in a full game of work.
Garis Grant (Charleston, S.C.) secured a double-double, her fourth of the season, with 12 points and 10 rebounds. The senior forward also continued her dominance in shot altering with four blocks. First-year Addison Harrison (Ellenwood, Ga.) led all players with a career-high four assists while running the point.
Agnes Scott is off for the next 11 days before heading to Memphis to take on Rhodes in the final game of 2019 on December 29.
