Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 DECATUR, Ga.—A pair of mid-inning rallies allowed visiting Wesleyan to spoil the season openers for Agnes Scott College Softball on Thursday evening. The Scotties jumped out to the early leads in each contest, but the Wolves battled back to win 6-2 and 5-2 at Oakhurst Field.
Wesleyan moves its record up to .500 at 2-2, rebounding after dropping a doubleheader to Covenant on Wednesday. The Scotties will head into tomorrow's home twinbill with Sewanee at 0-2.
Game One
Agnes Scott set the tone early with two runs in a wild second inning. Junior Nicole Gilkeson (Atlanta, Ga.) started off the scoring when she went from first to home on a pair of errors committed by the Wolves' infield on one play. Classmate Jessica Costero (Miami, Fla.) drove in the other run with a single to left.
The Wolves were held hitless through three innings by first-year pitcher Caitlin Weaver (Jacksonville, Fla.), but were able to tag her for three knocks in the top of the fourth. Weaver was able to bear down after getting into trouble and only allowed one run in the frame.
The first sign of trouble for the Scotties came in the bottom half of the fourth when they failed to plate a run after putting two runners in scoring position with no outs.
Wesleyan made them pay with four runs in the top of the fifth, all coming with two outs. The heartbreaker came off the bat of freshman Yasnei Llavore (Miami, Fla.) who hit a bases clearing to the double to the wall in right-center.
The Wolves added an insurance run in the sixth for good measure.
Valerie Clower (Reidsville, Ga.) took home the win for the Wolves in a full game of work, allowing only two runs on seven hits. Gilkeson suffered the loss after giving up four runs in the fateful fifth inning.
Weaver had six K's in her debut for the Scotties in the circle.
Game Two
Once again the Scotties put the first run on the board with some heads-up small ball with first-year's Tiara White (Sinton, Texas) and Cecilia Siegel (Plantation, Fla.) in the first stanza.
However, Wesleyan would score five runs between the 3rd and 6th innings to take control of momentum. LLavore was again a thorn in the side for the Scotties, adding two more RBI to her total for five between the two games.
First-year pitcher Shelby Crosby (High Springs, Fla.) got it done in all facets with a 3-for-4 night at the plate with an RBI. She also earned the win with a complete game outing.
Agnes' Tiara White took the loss in her collegiate debut.
Alexei Young (McDonough, Ga.) went 3-for-3 in the game with an RBI for the Scotties.
What's Next?
Agnes will look to rebound tomorrow evening with the Sewanee Tigers roaring into town for a 6 p.m. first pitch at Oakhurst Field. The Tigers have yet to play a game in 2018.
