Scotties Drop Two Heartbreakers at LaGrange

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LAGRANGE, Ga. - Agnes Scott College softball showed that they will be a force to be reckoned with in the future, as they put a scare in the defending USA South Conference tournament champions, dropping two close games to LaGrange on the road, 8-7 and 5-4 (8 innings).  Several Scotties had outstanding days at the plate.

In Game 1, a pitcher's duel turned into a slugfest, as the Scotties led, 2-0, entering the bottom of the fifth inning, before LaGrange (3-1) exploded for 6 runs to take a 4-run lead.  The Scotties would fight back for 3 runs of their own in their next at-bat, and tack on two more in the top of the seventh as Bailea Robinson, who batted a perfect 4-for-4 in Game 1, made her last at-bat of the game her most important, driving the ball over the fence to give the Scotties a one-run lead.  Unfortunately, LaGrange would answer with a two-run shot of their own to end the game.

"This was a very exciting moment for Bailea," commented head coach Talya DiGirolamo.  "This was her first college home run, and to do it in such an important situation as a first-year is a great sign for her future as a college player."

In Game 1, Casey Arnold pitched 4.1 innings and logged 3 strikeouts, before the big inning by LaGrange sent first-year Nicole Gilkeson to the mound.  Gilkeson was commendable, scattering 4 hits over two innings of work before the long ball to end the game.  At the plate, Jessica Costero had 2 RBIs, and Kelsea Hunter was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

In Game 2, the Scotties would once again take a one-run lead late in the game, as they rallied from a 3-1 deficit with 3 runs of their own in the top of the 6th inning.  Robinson would again factor into the Scottie rally, scoring off of a double by DeAnna Fulton, who had a double and a triple in the game.  However, as in Game 1, LaGrange fought back to take the game into extra innings as Kalin Oglesby singled with the bases loaded in the 8th inning to give the Panthers the win, 5-4.

Molly Baker pitched a complete game for the Scotties, going 7.1 innings, scattering 9 hits and striking out 3.  In addition to Fulton's two-hit performance, Hunter, Arnold, and Tatiana Santiago all had two hits in the contest.

The Scotties (1-7) return to action on Sunday, February 28 as they remain on the road for a double-header with Huntingdon College.  The teams will face off at 12:00 pm CST in Montgomery, Ala.  The two teams split their series two weeks ago as both teams opened the season at the Emory 3n2 Tournament.
