In its fifth season of competition, the Agnes Scott College lacrosse team showed courage in the face of adversity. The Scotties faced a coaching change at the start of the spring season and then competed with such a small roster that there were no subs available during most of the season.
The Scotties finished the season with a 0-9 record, but, in spite of the challenges, still had several close games. The Scotties lost by only three goals to USA South opponent N.C. Wesleyan and lost by five to LaGrange College, another USA South opponent.
Senior Caroline Recio, last year's second leading scorer, had a tough time scoring as the other teams defenders guarded her closely this season. Recio still managed to score five goals and lead the team with 29 draw controls. Off the lacrosse field, Recio is the first female to be commissioned as a field artillery 2nd Lt. through the GA Tech ROTC program and one of only 55 women in the country to do this in 2014.
Sophomore Monique Novoa led the Scotties with 13 goals and 36 shots. Senior Rachelle Pierre added nine goals and was second on the team in ground balls and draw controls with 20 and 21 respectively. First-year Alexis Nesbitt was the third leading scorer with eight goals and led the Scotties with 24 ground balls. In the goal, sophomore Ashley Holder played in all nine games and recorded 90 saves.
Pierre was awarded the Coach's Award at Agnes Scott's End of Year Athletic Banquet and Recio was awarded the Team First Award. Senior Brittany Starr who couldn't compete this year due to injury, was awarded a framed jersey for her four years of participation.
Other team members included junior Staci Pereira who also played soccer, sophomore Sumayyah Cooper, junior Bria Carr, sophomore Hallie Bates, also a soccer player, first-year Katrina Cavens, junior Mia Risper and first-year Karion Smith.
The Scotties were coached by assistant Coach Erin McBurnette who took over as head coach in the spring and she was joined by new assistant coach Kim McGowan.
