Box Score 2 The Agnes Scott College Softball team won their first game of the season this morning, 12-7, against Maryville College at Emory University and then later in the day lost to Emory, 0-8.
Maryville College started strong in the first inning with four runs but by the bottom of the fifth the two teams were tied 6-6. Maryville scored one run in the sixth inning and then Agnes Scott surged ahead with six runs. Sophomore Aimee McKibbin advanced to second base on errors followed by a walk for senior Shivani Ghodadra. McKibbin advanced to third on a passed ball and then a home run by sophomore Tiffany Cain pushed the Scotties ahead by three runs. Sophomore Kat Riale doubled followed by a double from First-year Casey Arnold for her first collegiate RBI. Sophomore Ashley Monsrud then tripled bringing in another runner and sophomore Alyssa Millikin hit a sacrifice fly bringing in another run for the Scotties and winning the game 12-7.
The Scotties totaled 12 runs, 13 hits and 0 errors while Maryville had 7 runs, 10 hits and 4 errors. Sophomore Tiffany Cain was the starting pitcher for the Scotties. Cain pitched five innings allowing seven hits, six runs, six errors and striking out two of 28 batters faced. First-year Casey Arnold pitched two innings and allowed three hits, one run and one error from seven batters faced.
In the second game of the day, Agnes Scott lost to the 23rd-ranked Emory University, 0-8, in five innings.
Agnes Scott struggled to get a solid hit off of Emory's first-year pitcher Madeline Lowery and when the did get a hit they could not get past Emory's other players. Two Scotties struck out and only four made it to a base in the 0-8 loss. Sophomore Julia Blattner pitched 3.2 innings allowing 11 hits, six runs, six errors and one walk from 24 batters faced. Casey Arnold pitched one inning allowing two runs, one error and four walks from seven batters faced.
The Scotties will close out the tournament tomorrow as they face Maryville at noon and Emory at 2 p.m.
