DECATUR, Ga. - Head Coach
Kyle Erha and the Agnes Scott Scotties relied on the long ball and heavy contributions from the bench to down Wesleyan this evening, running away in the second half to a 76-59 win. The Scotties (2-14, 1-7 Collegiate Conference of the South) had 41 points off the bench, and drained 12 three-pointers on the evening.
The first half was a back and forth affair, as Wesleyan (0-15, 0-8 CCS) jumped out to an early, 5-0, lead. Erha then sent five new players into the contest, who would quickly start turning things around, as
Jonah Wood got the Scotties on the board on their first possession off the bench, draining the first of three long balls for the sophomore in the contest. The reserve squad would go on an 18-6 scoring run to end the quarter and put the Scotties ahead, 18-13, after one.
In the second, the Scotties would stretch the lead to 9 late in the half, before going cold from the field, while the Wolves heated up, sinking their last five attempts of the half, as the teams would enter halftime locked at 33-33.
In the third, the Wolves also used the long ball to make a dent, as they drained two from long range to race out to a 39-33 lead.
Kaycie Hyde stopped the run with a three-point basket of her own with 7:02 to play, before Wesleyan's leading scorer, Zariah Davis, would get the Wolves back on top by 5 as she drove for a layup. From that point on, it would be all Scotties. A layup by
Alex McElroy and another three-pointer, this time from
Cybele Forbes, knotted the contest at 41-41. Forbes would score 7 points in a row, going 4-for-4 at the free throw line. McElroy would add a jumper, followed by another Forbes basket, and the Scotties found themselves up by 8, 49-41. The Wolves would make a small comeback, and the Scotties would enter the final quarter with a 51-48 lead.
The fourth quarter would be all Scotties, as the home team went 8-for-14 from the field, including 4-for-6 from three-point range. They led by as many as 19 in the final quarter, and the scoring ended as it began for Agnes Scott, on a three-pointer from Wood.
Every member of the Scotties made an important contribution in the win, as the Scottie depth was on display.
Kaycie Hyde led the scoring with 14 points on perfect 6-for-6 shooting, including two from long range.
Triniti Walker had her strongest game of the season, finishing with 12 points and making three from long distance.
Lexxi Romero-Williams was the other Scottie in double figures in scoring, finishing with 10 points. Three Scotties finished with 9 points, including McElroy, Wood and Forbes, who also contributed to her league-leading block total with 4 on the night in only 15 minutes of play.
On the defensive side of things, the Scotties forced 22 turnovers while committing a season-low 12 turnovers of their own. Every member of the team registered at least one steal, led by McElroy with 3. Leading scorer,
Anissa Brailsford, struggled from the field, but made her presence known on the boards, as she logged 12 rebounds.
The Scotties will hope to carry the positive momentum into their weekend trip to Belhaven (12-2, 5-1 CCS), who co-lead the conference standing. The two teams face off on Saturday at Belhaven.
