Scotties Battle Tough in Opening Loss to Truett McConnell

Box Score Match Results
CLEVELAND, Ga.--Host Truett McConnell University spoiled a fast start by Agnes Scott College women's tennis, holding on to a 6-1 victory. First-year Iris Ray (Marietta, Ga.) was perfect on the day, with wins in both doubles and singles action for the Scotties.

The match looked good for the Scotties early, jumping out to leads in both the first and third doubles flights. Up 3-0 at the top spot, an injury forced a retirement and gave the Bears their first point of the afternoon. The clinched the single doubles point a few minutes later with a 6-0 win at second doubles.

Agnes Scott's Fabiola Garcia (La Joya, Texas) and Ray teamed up to claim a 6-3 victory at third doubles, but TMU's 2-1 advantage after team action gave them the early one-match-point lead.

The Bears started with one singles point by default and subsequently won flights two through four without dropping a game, clinching the match in the process.

The Scotties got their first match points of the day with Ray's dominant 6-1, 6-1 showing at the sixth singles rank. Garcia also almost made it a perfect afternoon, overcoming a first-set loss to force a third-set tiebreak. The Agnes Scott junior battled to the end but came up just on the losing end of the super tiebreaker, 13-11.

Agnes Scott is back in action for its home opener at the Byers Tennis Courts versus Pfeiffer on Sunday at noon.
