BREVARD, N.C.—The host Tornados had just enough in each set to keep Agnes Scott volleyball off the scoreboard with a 3-0 victory to open the season. The Scotties played a close 25-22 set one before Brevard rallied off 25-16 and 25-15 scores in consecutive games to beat Agnes Scott in its 2021 debut.

Senior Tiara White (Sinton, Texas) got off a good start to the season with seven kills and a .250 hitting mark to go along with a service ace. Two-sport senior Musumaulai Galoia (Hephzibah, Ga.) also had a good day on defense with three totals blocks and seven points.

Brevard raced out to an early 7-1 lead in the first set only to see Agnes Scott storm back and take a late lead at 19-18. The Scotties and Tornados traded points for the next spurt until Brevard was able to finish off four of the final five points of the game for the slim victory.

The second set played out in a similar fashion with the two sides trading runs until Brevard was able to pull away with a final burst.

The Tornados were able to control the third and final set from beginning to end, never letting the Scotties closer than eight points in the late going.

The arm of Raley Shirey was a big part of the Tornado offense as they delivered 11 kills and 13 points in victory.

Both teams hit at a comfortably positive mark, but it was Agnes Scott's 15 service errors that really allowed Brevard to keep control over the final two sets.

First-year Ariel Henderson (College Park, Ga.) had 18 assists in her first collegiate match for Agnes Scott.

The Scotties head to Covenant on Tuesday night for a 7 p.m. first serve before playing in their own gym for the first time next Saturday versus Maryville College.
