Berea Spoils Senior Day with Score in Second Half

Box Score

DECATUR, Ga.—For nearly 55 minutes Agnes Scott held firm against visiting Berea College, but a quirky goal in the 55th minute broke a scoreless tie and sent the Mountaineers to a 1-0 victory. Sophomore keeper Ashley Kopczyk (Elgin, Ill.) made 16 stops in the loss for Agnes Scott.

In a matchup that featured two winless teams, Berea had the more dangerous chances in the offensive third throughout. The Mountaineers pressured the Scotties from the start, registering a season-high 33 shots and nine corner kicks.

However, a 16-2 shot advantage in the first half registered nothing for the visitors as Kopczyk's big-time saves from close proximity kept an opponent out of the back of the net for an entire half for the first time in 2021.

Ending the first half empty-handed put a sour taste in the mouth of the Mountaineers and they came out of the 15-minute intermission with a renewed energy on offense. Berea marched down the field and put two dangerous opportunities quickly on frame, one hitting the outside of the right post. The constant pressure finally yielded results in the 55th minute of action as a two-on-one play left Kylie Bowman wide open from eight yards out. On a pass from the right from Alanis Daugherty, Bowman chopped one just inside the left post for what ended up as the game-winner.

The Scotties had just one shot in the second half, but it was its best chance all day. Senior Rebecca Flores-Hernandez (Chicago, Ill.) found herself with space near the top of the 18-yard box. The midfielder one-timed and it looped just over the crossbar to eliminate the threat of an equalizer.

The Scotties recognized Abby Ackerson (Hoover, Ala.), Blu Laseter (Monroe, Ga.), Kaitlyn Staten (Hahira, Ga.), Sydni Perry (Evans, Ga.) and Flores-Hernandez before the contest for their efforts over the last four seasons.

Agnes Scott (0-6) has two games remaining on its schedule, both at Gellerstedt Field. Covenant College comes to Decatur a week from Saturday on March 27 before the Scotties close out the season on March 31 versus Wesleyan College.
