SWEET BRIAR, Va. - In a non-conference match today on the road, Agnes Scott (0-4-1) settled for a draw today with Sweet Briar (0-2-3), as
Tigui Diallo scored her first collegiate goal to start the first half of play. Sweet Briar scored the equalizer just 36 seconds into the second half. Both teams had numerous opportunities to score the game winner, but the story of the day was the play of both team's goalkeepers, as they combined for 23 saves on the day.
Four minutes into the first half, a goal kick from Sweet Briar found the foot of
Dewi Hammer of the Scotties, who fed the ball in to
Mahdi Walker, who set up Diallo for her shot, which sailed into the upper right corner of the goal to give the Scotties the lead. The Vixens would threaten throughout the first half, but Scottie goalkeeper
Olivia Rosario stopped all 8 shots that were on target to preserve the 1-0 lead. The Scotties had numerous scoring opportunities of their own, and continued to show their accuracy, having all six shots taken be on target.
In the second half, the Vixens came out determined to get on the board, and they did just that as Electra McPherson took a feed from Alexis Diaz and drove a shot past Rosario in a one-on-one situation. For the rest of the half, the scoring opportunities came for both teams, but Rosario and Arianna Nguyen of the Vixens were up to the task. The Scotties had one final opportunity, gaining possession and a corner kick with just 30 seconds remaining, but
Dewi Hammer's shot was blocked just before the final whistle.
The Vixens outshot the Scotties, 29-11, for the contest, but as has been the case this season, the Scotties were accurate with their shotmaking. While Sweet Briar had 15 of 29 shots on target, the Scotties had only one that did not have the potential to score, going 10 for 11.
Mahdi Walker led the way for the Scotties with 4 shots on goal to go along with her assist. Diallo added another shot on goal in the first half, and Hammer finished with two shots, including the blocked shot to end the game.
Hannelis Rodas and
Piper Martinsen were the other Scotties who registered a shot at the Vixen goal.
In goal, Rosario finished with 14 saves, raising her average to 11.8 saves per game. She currently sits in the Top 10 in NCAA Division III in that category. The Scotties' shot accuracy also ranks in the Top 10 of NCAA Division III, as they now average 79.3% of their shots being on target (23-for-29).
The Vixens were led by Yadira Castrejon and Alexis Diaz, who each shot the ball 8 times. Nguyen was perfect on the day in goal after relieving starter, Kylee Nickerson, who allowed the Scottie goal in the first half. In 74 minutes of play, Nguyen made 7 saves.
The Scotties will kick off Collegiate Conference of the South play on Thursday, September 24, as they host Belhaven (2-2-1, 1-0 CCS) at 5:00 p.m.
