DECATUR, Ga.—Maryville College spoiled the home opener for Agnes Scott women's tennis, besting the Scotties 9-0 at Byers Tennis Courts on Saturday. The Scots picked up their first victory of the season while Agnes Scott dropped to 0-3 to start the year.
The Scots swept the doubles lineup while only dropping one game between the top two spots to take a commanding 3-0 lead.
Agnes Scott looked a bit more comfortable in singles' play comparatively to its first two matches, but Maryville's depth clinched a clean sweep for the shutout.
Kayla Zimmerman, an all-conference performer for Maryville, took care of Agnes Scott first-year Trestin Artkhaxa (Stockbridge, Ga.) atop the lineup 6-1, 6-2. The Scots only dropped one total game between the second and fourth flights, but Katiuska Toral Castillo (Columbus, Ohio) was able to shake off a 6-0 loss in set one to make things closer in the second set. Maryville's Abby Smither was ultimately able to take care of business, beating Toral Castillo 6-3 to clinch the match score at 9-0.
The Scotties remain at home for the next three weeks with home matches vs. Huntingdon, Berea, and LaGrange on consecutive Saturdays.
