Box Score BREVARD, N.C.—Brevard's Ashley Royster (Mooresville, N.C.) sent home a one-on-one moment with the keeper to break a scoreless tie in the 85th minute, besting the visiting Agnes Scott Scotties 1-0 at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
In a game where the Scotties dominated the stat sheet in most categories, Royster's perfectly timed moment was all the Tornados needed to flip the script of the game. The freshman took advantage of one of Agnes' few mistakes in the match, catching the Scotties flatfooted along the backline in the ending minutes of regulation. A perfectly played through ball found Royster in stride as she glided past the final line of defense before placing a ball just out of reach an approaching Victoria Cruz (Duncanville, Texas).
Agnes Scott had plenty of dangerous moments in the match, but the finishing in the final third was just off to keep the defensive-minded Tornados in the game. Twice in the final 20 minutes, Agnes Scott looked poised to take the lead only to see those opportunities go just wide of the mark.
All the Tornados needed was a singular moment and they took advantage.
The Scotties finished with a 16-12 edge in shot attempts, but Brevard's pressure in the second half gave them a 5-3 advantage in corners in the end
Cruz made eight stops for the Scotties despite taking the loss. Rebeccah Rojas (Murrieta, Calif.) saved all nine shots she saw for the Tornados to earn a third win this season.
Agnes Scott (4-7, 2-2 USA South) heads to division-leading Maryville tonight ahead of a conference showdown at 2 p.m. tomorrow.
