Box Score DECATUR, Ga. - Playing staunch defense and taking advantage of offensive opportunities when they presented themselves, Agnes Scott College (3-2) upset Covenant (1-1) today for their first win over the Scots in school history, defeating the visiting team, 2-0. Sarah Fisher and Stephanie Hicks both scored goals for the Scotties, who now ride a two-game winning streak, with both victories coming over future USA South opponents. Agnes Scott will join the USA South next season in all sports.
After a scoreless first half, where the Scotties were outshot, 10-4, the team returned to the field with the same strategy: stingy defense and making aggressive runs throughout the half. It was not long before their strategy paid off, when Sarah Fisher took a free kick from 30 yards out, curling the ball over the entire defense and the goalkeeper, sailing into the upper left corner of the goal at the 46th minute.
The two teams would continue to push the tempo throughout the second half. Scotties goalkeeper Sydney Holstad made 10 saves on the day, including a diving save to her right late in the game that could have tied things up. After a long possession by the Scots in Agnes Scott territory, Zoey Perchaluk lofted a ball over the defense and caught a running Stephanie Hicks in stride. Hicks flew into the box unscathed and drove home an insurance goal at the 84th minute, driving it into the right side of the net.
The victory stops a 4 game skid all-time against Covenant, who are former members of the Great South Athletic Conference. The Scotties will try to make it three in a row against the USA South when they travel to Maryville on September 15 for an 8 p.m. EST contest.
