ATLANTA, Ga. – Facing off with the same team they faced a year ago in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, the Agnes Scott College women's volleyball team (3-10) kept things close in the first set, but were eventually downed by Emory (15-2), the 3rd ranked team in the nation (25-16, 25-7, 25-7).
In the first set, Agnes Scott went toe-to-toe with the Eagles in the first half of the set, holding a 10-9 lead off of a kill by setter Shakirah Dodson. The Scotties stayed within three points of the Eagles until a 9-3 run by the home team would close out the set, 25-16.
The second two sets both saw lengthy runs by the Eagles, and the Scotties were unable to produce enough offense to keep up with the rapid pace of Emory's offense. Overall, 35 of the 73 attacks for the Eagles resulted in kills, with the team only committing seven attack errors, resulting in a hitting percentage of .384, raising their season average to a blistering .267. The Scotties, by comparison, were only able to muster 12 kills throughout the match, with season-leader Lauren Aikens leading the way with six, and Dodson recording eight assists.
On the defensive side, Shelli Sherman recorded nine digs, and Destiny Dawkins pitched in with five.
The Scotties return to the court on Tuesday, September 30 when they return home for a 6:30 p.m. match against Huntingdon College. Admission is free to the public.
