DECATUR, Ga. – The Agnes Scott women's soccer team (1-4-0) faced off with another strong non-conference opponent today at home, dropping a 3-0 decision to Birmingham Southern (6-1-0). Birmingham Southern opened up an early lead with a goal in the sixth minute, and pressed the pace throughout the match.
Jessie Sperry opened the scoring for the Panthers, tallying her team-high tenth goal of the season on an unassisted shot from the right side which found its way past Scottie Goalkeeper Ivy MacIntyre and into the left bottom corner of the goal. The score would remain tied until the 36th minute when Bethany Kuerten set up Avery Newcomb for her 2nd goal of the season for the visitors. The final tally would come in the first minute of the second half, with Sammy Manzo breaking free for an unassisted goal 42 seconds into the second half.
"Today was a tough match for us. I was proud of our effort, but we struggled to connect the dots," commented Scottie Head Coach Rosemary Davis. "We've played two games in three days and injuries are catching up to us, so a few days to regroup before Oglethorpe will help us immensely."
The Scotties effort was not without its highlights, as they had three corner kicks to Birmingham Southern's one, as well as three shots on goal from three different players. Also, the defense shut down the powerful BSC offense for the last 45 minutes, and held them under their season average of 4 goals per game. MacIntyre made ten saves for the Scotties.
"We are getting physically and mentally tougher each game," continued Davis, "and I'm excited to see how we continue to develop."
The Scotties will try to back on the winning track on Thursday, September 25th as they travel across town to Oglethorpe University in a regional match at 4:30 p.m.
