Scotties End Solid Weekend with Draw, 2-2

Gaines Adds Another Goal for Agnes Scott

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Agnes Scott completed their brief swing through the Tarheel State as they finished off the weekend with a battle at Salem College (1-1-2), racing out to an early lead before settling for a 2-2 tie with the Spirits.

In the first half for the Scotties (1-2-1), Damaris Gaines once again was the offensive spark, getting Agnes Scott on the board just over 2 minutes into the game, as she booted in a shot from the left side over the outstretched arms of the goalkeeper to give the Scotties the early edge. That scoreline would hold until the half was reaching its conclusion. Agnes Scott was making a push into the Salem half of the field when a defender for Salem tried to feed the ball back to the goalkeeper, resulting in an "own goal" which helped the Scotties grow their lead to 2-0 enteirng halftime.

The Spirits came out fired up in the second half and continued to put pressure on the Scottie defense. They outshot the Scotties, 6-0, over the first twenty minutes of the second half, but remained without a goal until Maddie Sharrai was finally able to get Salem on the board as a shot from Pilar Neumann ricocheted off of Scottie goalkeeper, Olivia Rosario, landing right at the feet of Sharrai, who drove it home. Two minutes later in the 71st minute, leading scorer Darilyn Nieto, who had five goals in Saturday's match against Wesleyan, finally found the net against the Scotties. The Scotties would make a couple more pushes in the end of the half, including a free kick with 30 seconds remaining, which Gaines sent on target, but was stopped by the Salem goalie.

Rosario would finish with 9 saves on the day as she took the draw in goal. Gaines finished the day with 5 shots including 4 on target and her early goal. Iris Ray contributed the other shot on goal for the Scotties, who were outshot in the contest, 25-7, but once again were on target with a high percentage of shots, having 5 of 7 on target compared to 11 of 25 for the Spirits. For the season, the Scotties are now shooting .824 (14 for 17) in shots on goal.

The Scotties return to action at home on Thursday, September 11, as they host Regent University (0-3-0) on the campus of Agnes Scott. The game kicks off at 4:00 p.m.
