SWANNANOA, N.C. - Agnes Scott picked up their first win of the young soccer season with an exciting, 4-2, victory over Warren Wilson (0-1-1) on the road today. The Scotties used every opportunity they were given to get on the scoreboard, in a game in which they never trailed.
In a game which was a back-and-forth affair, Warren Wilson pressed forward as often as possible, while the Scotties (1-2-0) relied on their counter attack to keep the Owls off-balance. For the second straight contest, senior midfielder
Iris Ray took advantage of a ball at midfield which caught the defense sleeping. With 4 minutes remaining in the first half, the Owls left the ball sitting well outside the box in the middle of the field, with the goalkeeper pulled out, and Ray sprinted between Owl defenders and launched the ball over the whole defense for her first goal of the season. In last week's contest against Oglethorpe, she had a similar play which fed
Maahla Fofack for the Scotties' first goal of the season. The Owls quickly countered, however, as Ori Galloway gave the home crowd something to cheer about as the two teams entered halftime locked in a 1-1 tie.
In the second half, the goals came early for both sides. Scottie sophomore
Laura Damonte was the first to get on the board, as
Damaris Gaines fed her a clean pass outside the box in the 48th minute, which Damonte nailed into the corner for the second Scottie goal, giving them the 2-1 advantage. Galloway would once again keep the Scottie advantage short and sweet, however, as she scored for the second time in the contest, heading in a perfect feed from Eden Gfeller to bring things level at 2-2.Â
Gaines would provide the rest of the fireworks for the Scotties, as she pulled the Scotties ahead for good in the 65th minute, weaving through the Owls' defense on the counter attack, and fired a clean shot past the Owl goalkeeper for a 3-2 advantage. Just one minute later, Fofack picked up her first assist of the season as she found a streaking Gaines down the middle and Gaines once again drove a solid shot past a diving goalie for the Owls.Â
Another big story on the night was the play of Scottie goalkeeper
Olivia Rosario, who picked up the win after making 7 saves. The Owls would outshoot the Scotties, 23-7, but maintain only a slight advantage in shots on goal, as they were on target with 9 of their shots, compared to 6 for the Scotties. Gaines finished with 3 shots on goal, Damonte had 2, and Ray drove home her only shot of the evening.
The Scotties will get back on the road for a Sunday contest at former GSAC and USA South rival, Salem College (0-1-1), on Sunday, September 7 at Noon on the Spirits home field in Winston-Salem, N.C.
