MONTGOMERY, Ala. - In a game that saw several swings of momentum, Agnes Scott fell in a tight contest with Huntingdon, 75-63. Four different players finished in double-digits on the scoreboard for Agnes Scott (3-20, 2-12 Collegiate Conference of the South).
In the first quarter, Agnes Scott trailed, 6-5, before going on a 9-2 run to open up a 14-8 lead on the Hawks (11-13, 7-8 CCS), who were looking to lock up a playoff spot in the CCS Tournament. The Scotties would stretch their first quarter lead to 7 at the buzzer, as
Sydney Evans scored off an assist from freshman
Zania Gay, giving the Scotties an 18-11 lead after one.
The Scotties stayed hot early in the second quarter as they stretched their lead to 11 behind technical free throws from
Laila Williams and another
Sydney Evans bucket. The tide would turn behind the three-point shooting of the Hawks, and several trips to the free throw line for the Hawks, as the home team went to the foul line 10 times in the quarter. The Hawks would lead, 37-32, entering the break.
In the third quarter, the Hawks continued their strong play, while the Scotties, who shot 44.4% in the first half, struggled from the field (3-for-14, 21.4%). The Hawks, on the other hand, shot 40% for the quarter and stretched their lead to a seemingly insurmountable 61-42 deficit.
The game was not finished with its momentum shifts, however, as the Scotties, playing with only 7 players, showed grit and determination. They never gave up in the contest and found their touch from the floor once again. They opened the fourth frame on a 12-0 scoring run to bring the game back within 7 points, keyed by 4 points from Evans in the paint. The Scotties would bring the score as close as 6 points (63-57) after a three-pointer by
Zania Gay, but the Hawks managed to hold on and finish off the contest, winning by a final score of 75-63.
Balance was the theme of the evening for the Scotties, as several players contributed to the close contest.
Sydney Evans finished with one of her most impressive evenings of her senior year, finishing with 13 points, 10 rebounds, and 7 blocked shots. Evans currently sits in the Top Ten in NCAA Division III in blocks per game (2.95 bpg, 7th in NCAA Division III).
Zania Gay led the Scotties in scoring with 14 points, going 3-for-6 from behind the arc.
Laila Williams continued her strong sophomore campaign, using her slashing style to draw several fouls in the paint, as she finished with 13 points, and was a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line. Williams also led the Scotties with 4 steals on the evening. Reigning CCS Rookie of the Week,
Anissa Brailsford, also had a great night for the Scotties, logging her fifth double-double of the year, scoring 12 points and hauling in 16 rebounds.
Scottie head coach,
Kyle Erha, commented, "I am very proud of the way the team fought back in the 4th quarter. We cut a 19-point lead down to 6 and never gave up. This team is showing a lot of resilience and poise and have been fighting hard in every contest."
The Scotties will look to continue their positive momentum in their final home contest on Thursday, as they face off with LaGrange (12-11, 6-8 CCS) in a game postponed by weather earlier in the season. In their contest a week ago, the Scotties almost pulled off the upset, dropping a 73-67 decision to the Panthers. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. in the Woodruff Gymnasium.
