DEMOREST, Ga. - Facing off with the league-leading Piedmont Lions (13-6, 9-1 Collegiate Conference of the South), the Scotties of Agnes Scott (2-14, 1-6 CCS) showed marked improvement in a 73-56 loss. Leading the way for the Scotties was freshman guard
Zania Gay, who exploded for a season-high 18 points, to go along with 5 steals on the evening.
Several Scotties had outstanding performances on the evening, as sophomore
Laila Williams pitched in with 11 points of her own, including nailing two shots from three-point range. Senior
Ivey Portis logged double-digits in rebounds with 11, to go along with 7 points and 5 steals. Freshman forward
Anissa Brailsford contributed 11 rebounds of her own, and led the Scotties in assists with 4. Senior center
Sydney Evans, who ranks in the Top Ten in all of NCAA Division III in blocks per game, added to her impressive total for the season by swatting away 7 shots on the night, raising her season average to 3.0 blocks per game, which leads the CCS by a large margin (1.8 bpg is the closest competitor).
In their earlier encounter with Piedmont at home, the Scotties were downed, 79-44. This game also marked a huge improvement for the Scotties in ball control, as they forced Piedmont into 26 turnovers, while committing only 21 of their own. The game also marked season-highs in several categories for the Scotties, including steals (19), assists (11), and blocked shots (8).Â
The Scotties will look to use this positive momentum in their upcoming conference contests, scheduled for this weekend. On Friday, the Scotties welcome Asbury University (8-7, 5-1 CCS), in the teams' first meeting in history. On Saturday, the Scotties face a more familiar foe as they host Maryville (5-11, 4-3 CCS).Â
