WEST POINT, Ga. - The Agnes Scott College softball team dropped two close contests on the road today, falling to NAIA-member, Point University, by scores of 6-4 and 5-2. With the losses, the Scotties fall to 11-19 on the season.
In Game 1, the Scotties got on the board early, as
Sadie McCallum singled home
PresLee Hix to open up a 1-0 lead for the visiting Scotties. Point (7-27) would respond in the bottom of the third inning, scoring two runs with two outs to take the lead, 2-1. Hix would pull the Scotties even in the top of the 5th, as she drove a double to center field to bring
Megan Smith all the way around from first base, evening the contest at 2 apiece.
The bottom of the 5th inning would put the Skyhawks in the lead for good, as they loaded the bases and were able to use clutch baserunning to score three runs on fielder's choices, and tag on an additional run off of a single to bring their lead to 6-2. The Scotties would rally later in the top of the 6th inning with two down, as
Bella Leonardi stepped to the plate with the bases loaded, and forced the third base player into a difficult throw, scoring
Beck Littlehale and McCallum to bring the Scotties within two. The Skyhawks were able to hold the Scotties without a run in the top of the 7th to end the first game of the doubleheader.
McCallum and Hix would both finish 2-for-4 in the game, with each also contributing an RBI and a run. On the mound,
Amanda Barnes suffered the setback, pitching 4.1 innings, while allowing just 4 hits and 4 earned runs.
Kyra Hornsby came on in relief in the 5th inning, throwing 1.2 scoreless innings and scattering two hits and a strikeout.
In Game 2, the Skyhawks opened the game with a 4-run first inning, and the lead proved insurmountable for the Scotties. The Scotties were able to add a run in the 4th inning off of a
Kenzie Beaudoin single, which drove in McCallum, and they also tacked on a run in the top of the 5th, when McCallum reached first base on an errant throw by the Skyhawks' shortstop, and
Kilee Thomas raced home from second base. Point would add a run in the bottom of the 5th to bring the lead back to 5-2, which would be where the game ended two innings later.
Bryn Greenwood suffered the loss on the mound, throwing a complete game and striking out 4 Skyhawk batters. At the plate,
Kristen Gilbert was the lone Scottie to register multiple hits on the day, going 2-for-4 in the leadoff spot. She also had a stolen base on the day, along with McCallum.
Agnes Scott will meet a familiar foe in their next contest, as they welcome Clark Atlanta to Oakhurst Park on Wednesday, April 10. The two teams fared off earlier this season at Clark Atlanta, in a doubleheader, in which each team picked up a win. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. for Game 1, with a 5:00 p.m. start for the second contest. Admission is free.
