Tennis Downs Belhaven, 7-2

Gibbs and Ray win twice to lead Scotties to conference win

DECATUR, Ga. - Agnes Scott greatly improved their chances for a Collegiate Conference of the South Tournament bid with a solid, 7-2, win over Belhaven University (2-17, 204 CCS) today on the courts of the Byers Tennis Center at home. The Scotties (2-11, 2-4 CCS) picked up two wins each from Iris Ray and Allyson Gibbs to gain momentum heading into their final regular season contest against LaGrange College tomorrow.

In the doubles, the Scotties picked up a forfeit at the No. 3 spot. Both of the top two matches were back-and-forth affairs, and the two teams split those matches. At the top spot, Ray and Gibbs used aggressive baseline play and solid returning to stifle the Blazers top duo, winning their match by a final of 8-5. At the No. 2 spot, Leilah Lewinson and Rosie Hagel fought back from an early deficit to bring the match as close as 6-7, but the Blazers were able to pull out the win, 8-6.

In singles, Gibbs had her most impressive outing of the season, as the freshman dominated from start to finish with powerful baseline play, dropping only one game in her 6-0, 6-1 rout of Belhaven's top player. Belhaven would pick up another win at the No. 2 spot, before the three remaining matches went the way of the Scotties. At the No. 5 spot, Fabiola Garcia wrapped up the win for the Scotties, dominating the second set to win, 6-4, 6-0. Hagel would follow after a brief hiccup in the second set, fighting back from 2-5 down to win, 6-1, 7-5, before Ray made it a runaway, winning the longest match of the day, 6-1, 6-4. The Scotties were awarded the No. 6 match by default.

The Scotties will not rest for long, as they return to their home courts to face off with CCS foe, LaGrange (0-17, 0-5 CCS). The Scotties currently sit in 5th place in the conference standings. The top 6 teams qualify for the CCS Championship Tournament, which will take place April 25-27 at Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
