BEREA, Ky. - Coming off of a dry spell offensively in Friday's doubleheader with Maryville, the Agnes Scott softball team took their frustrations out on Berea College, exploding for 36 runs on the day on the road, sweeping the series by scores of 17-4, and 19-6. With the victories, the Scotties snapped a 10-game losing streak, while also picking up their first two Collegiate Conference of the South wins on the season. Agnes Scott (9-17, 2-6 CCS) scattered 41 hits between the two contests, including nine extra-base hits. The Mountaineers (1-19, 0-10 CCS) also struggled with aggressive baserunning from the Scotties, as the Scotties logged 9 stolen bases on the day.
Game 1 Recap
In the opening contest,
PresLee Hix got the Scotties off to an exciting start, tripling in the first at-bat of the contest. A single from
Kilee Thomas would score Hix, and the Scotties would load the bases with two outs.
Bella Leonardi then stepped to the plate and drove a pitch over the fence to lodge a Scottie grand slam, leading to a 5-0 lead for the visiting team. After the Mountaineers got on the board in the bottom of the first inning off of a solo home run by Aubrey Sowders, the Scotties responded with three more runs in the top of the second inning. A double by Hix drove in
Megan Smith, followed by a double by
Colleen Thorson, which scored Hix. Thorson would score off of a single by Thomas later in the inning to bring the score to 8-1 in favor of the Scotties. The Scotties would go on outscore the Mountaineers, 9-3, over the next three innings, to take the win, 17-4.Â
On the mound for the Scotties,
Amanda Barnes (1-1) picked up the complete game victory. Barnes allowed only 6 hits through 5 innings, striking out 4 while walking two Berea batters. At the plate, Hix, Thomas and Smith would all register 3 hits, with Hix finishing the game a home run short of hitting for the cycle, collecting a single, double and triple. Leonardi's grand slam led to her leading the Scotties in RBIs with 4, while Thomas drove in 3 runs and Thorson finished with 2 RBIs.
Game 2 Recap
In the second game, the story of the day for the Scotties was the bat of
Kenzie Beaudoin, who finished the day 5-for-5, with 6 RBIs, including a 3-run home run in the top of the 5th inning to finish off a season-leading 19-run game for Agnes Scott. Seven different Scotties registered multi-hit performances in Game 2, including a 3-for-3 performance from Hix, and
Mercedes Barker finishing 2-for-3 with 4 runs and an RBI.Â
The Scotties raced to a 10-0 lead in the top of the third inning, led by an 8-run 3rd inning. In that inning, Leonardi continued her strong day at the plate, driving in 3 runners on a double to left field to start the scoring in the 3rd.
Natalie Bains would follow with a double to drive in Leonardi, and, not to be outdone, Hix rapped a double to center field to score Bains. The Scotties would open a 19-2 lead on the Mountaineers over the final two innings, before Berea made a late surge to score four runs in the bottom half of the inning.
On the mound,
Kyra Hornsby (1-1) picked up the victory, throwing 4.1 innings and registering an impressive 7 strikeouts, while walking no one.
Regan Hutto came in for relief in the bottom of the fifth, allowing only one hit while retiring two of the last three batters for Berea.
Next up for the Scotties is an important road contest at Collegiate Conference of the South rival, Wesleyan College (5-14, 2-6 CCS). The two teams currently sit tied for sixth in the conference standings. First pitch for the doubleheader is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on the campus of the Wolves in Macon, Ga.
