Decatur, GA-- The Agnes Scott Scotties swept their mid-week doubleheader against the visiting Salem College winning 3-2 and 9-1.
Game 1: Agnes Scott 3, Salem 2
The Scotties began their offensive attack early in the first game plating two runs in the bottom of the first.
PresLee Hix started off the Scotties with a lead-off double down the left field line, and scored immediately off the bat of a
Colleen Thorson single. Thorson moved into scoring position after stealing second and then advancing to third on a past ball. With a runner in scoring position,
Mercedes Barker singled to left field plating another Scottie run.
In the top of the second, the Scotties defended their two run lead by flexing their defense and working around a one-out walk. In the bottom of the second, Hix got her second hit of the game, but was ultimately left on base to end the inning.
The top of the third provided another opportunity for the Scotties to show off their defensive strengths as Salem stranded a lead-off walk. However, in the top of the fourth Salem scored two runs to tie the game.
In her first full inning of relief,
Bryn Greenwood held Salem scoreless and picked up two strikeouts in the inning. Her work in the circle continued with a three-up three-down inning in the top of the 6th inning to keep the score all tied up.
In the Scotties bottom of the sixth, Barker, the game winning run, singled down the right field line. Barker subsequently reached third base on a fielder's choice and throwing error by the shortstop. Helping out her own cause, Greenwood scored Barker from third on a bunt-and-run play thus bringing the score 3-2.
In the top of the seventh, Greenwood returned to the mound where she sat down the Salem batters in order and picked up two more strikeouts in route to defeating Salem 3-2.
Game 2: Agnes Scott 9, Salem 1
To start the second game, both teams were held to a scoreless first inning. In the top of the second, Salem plated one unearned run.
In the bottom of the second, the Scotties quickly regained the lead and some.
Mercedes Barker lead off the inning with a walk and quickly made her way to third after
Sadie McCallum successfully singled on a bunt and then stole second. With two runners in scoring position,
Kristen Gilbert singled to shortstop scoring a run and bringing runners to the corners before stealing second. Hitting for herself,
Regan Hutto singled to center field scoring another Scottie run to give them the lead.
Megan Smith followed up with a single to right center to plate two more runs for the Scotties. With a runner on second, Hix tripled allowing Smith to score and bringing the score to 5-1.
Hutto defended the four run lead in the top of the third allowing the Scotties to continue their offensive barrage. In the bottom of the third, the Scotties added on another run with a RBI off the bat of Gilbert to increase the Scottie lead to 6-1.
The Scotties once again flexed their defensive muscle in the top of the fourth with a inning-ending double-play to protect their five run lead. In the bottom of the sixth, the Scotties plated two more runs with a Barker RBI double and a RBI single from McCallum.
The Scotties scored again in the bottom of the fifth bringing the score to 9-1 and triggering a run rule victory.
