The Scotties traveled to Sewanee, Tennessee on Sunday to face the Tigers of Sewanee. The Scotties grit and determination showed through as they mounted two come from behind victories to complete the sweep.
Game 1: Agnes Scott 14, Sewanee 10
The Scotties' offense got off to a hot start in the first of two games played at Sewanee on Sunday.
The scoring started early as Colleen Thorson followed up PresLee Hix lead-off double with Thorson's first homerun of the year to give the Scotties the early 2-0 lead. Kilee Thomas continued the early offensive attack with a double that was then followed by a walk, a hit by pitch, and a walk that plated a run. With bases loaded, Megan Smith singled up the middle scoring Mercedes Barker. Another hit by pitch allowed Sadie McCallum crossed the plate bringing the score to 5-0 before recording a single out. A sacrifice fly by Kristen Gilbert scored Beck Littlehale brought the score to 6-0. Leadoff, Hix picked up an RBI and the Scotties earned another run on a fielding error thus plating 8 runs in the first inning that saw 12 Scotties at the plate.
Sewanne was not going to go down quietly. They responded to the Scotties' early barrage by scoring 99 of their own runs in the bottom of the first.
The score remained the same through three quiet innings before the Scotties re-took the lead in the top of the fourth inning. Leadoff, Hix took advantage of a throwing error and was able to advance to second base. Next, Thorson doubled to left field scoring Hix to tie up the game. With bases loaded, Smith singled up the middle for the Scotties to retake the lead. A patient plate appearance by Keke Mays lead to a walk and another run for the Scotties to bring them to a 11-9 lead.
Once again, Sewanee responded by plating one run in the bottom of the fourth inning.
In the top of the fifth inning, Thorson hit her second homerun of the day to bring the Scotties' lead back up to two runs. After holding Sewanee in the bottom of the fifth, the Scotties scored on a single by Gilbert thus bringing the score to 13-10. The Scotties' defense held in the bottom of the sixth to keep Sewanee off the board.
The Scotties added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning when Smith reached on a fielding error scoring Thomas started the inning with a double. The Scotties' defense neutralized any late-inning threats from Sewanee and were able to hold their 14-10 lead for the victory.
Regan Hutto earned the win in the circle and improved to (4-2) on the year.
Game 2: Agnes Scott 9, Sewanee 5
After a quiet first two innings to start the second game, the Scotties opened the scoring in the top of the third inning with Grace Clemmer reaching first on a fielding error. With a runner on base, Hix hit their first homerun of the year putting the Scotties up 2-0. Like the first game, Sewanee responded with five runs of their own in the bottom of the third inning before Bryn Greenwood was able to work out of the inning.
In the top of the fifth, the Scotties got to work quickly with back-to-back-to-back doubles by Smith , Hix , and Thorson thus plating two runs bringing the Scotties to a one run difference. Thomas followed the offensive barrage with a single and a stolen base. Barker then doubled scoring bothThomas and Thorson to bring the Scotties to a 6-4 lead. After a pitching change, Barker scored on a wild pitch to put the Scotties ahead 7-5.
In the bottom of the fifth, Hutto came in to replace Greenwood, and was able to pitch around a double and a walk to hold the score at 7-5. The Scotties added on three insurance runs in the topf of the sixth with a slew of doubles by Smith, Thorson, and Thomas. Barker also contributed a single that resulted in a RBI to increase the lead.
In relief, Hutto held Sewanee to zero runs to secure the Scotties' second win of the day.
The Scotties will hope to carry the momentum from this sweep to their next match-up as they face Salem College at home on March 13, 2024.
