Scotties Drop Season Opener to Oglethorpe University Despite Strong Showing

DECATUR, Ga. – The Agnes Scott College women's soccer team ushered in a new era under Interim Head Coach Chris Madrigal this afternoon in its season opener against the Stormy Petrels of Oglethorpe University. The Scotties were put to the test, falling 6-1 in a physical match on their home field at Gellerstedt Field.

"The game went really well," said Scotties Captain Kaela Brooks. "We lost but the team made a lot of progress since the scrimmage."

Iris Ray made her collegiate debut and sophomore Isis Franklin were each one for one with one shot and one shot on goal.

Peighton Freeman led the Scotties and was two for two with two shots and two shots on goal with one goal scored at 51:31.

Oglethorpe University tallied six shots, four of which came in the second half. Ashley Kopczyk was the goalkeeper for the Scotties playing 90:00 minutes allowing only six goals and securing 11 saves in the season opener.

"The team really stepped up today," said Madrigal. "They put a lot of effort in. The progress is coming. We're still early in the season and we're building something special pretty fast. We're just going to get back to work tomorrow. We've got a game on Saturday and hopefully, we'll keep the momentum going."

The Scotties will now turn their attention to Saturday as they look to bounce back against Mississippi University for Women. Kick-off is set for 2 p.m. at Gellerstedt Field.
