Wolves Stop Scotties in Fifth Set

Box Score

MACON, Ga.—A tough break led Agnes Scott to finish on the wrong side of a five-set match versus Wesleyan College on Saturday evening. The Scotties scored a season-high 58 points on offense, including a career-best effort from Alex Roquemore (Dallas, Texas), but a late mishap in a tight match gave the Wolves the final push they needed to claim the victory.

First sets have been an issue for the Scotties all season with slow starts acting as the norm. Wesleyan took advantage of such a beginning, racing out to an 18-7 lead in the opening set and well on their way to an early advantage. To its credit, Agnes Scott broke out of its early woes in a big way, going on a 16-6 run to close the gap to one. The Scotties fended off three consecutive set points to draw close, but Wesleyan's Cheyanne McDonald ended the threat with a kill to take set one 25-23.

The tables were turned in set two, with Agnes Scott finding its rhythm on offense and running out to a big lead. The Scotties led 21-14 until Wesleyan responded with a seven-point run to knot things up. Agnes Scott settled back down and won four of the final five service points to tie the match at one game apiece.

The Scotties used the momentum for a cover-to-cover triumph in set three at 25-17 before turning their sights to the fourth game. Agnes Scott shook off an early six-point led for the Wolves and took a 20-18 advantage with the taste of victory within reach.

Wesleyan had other ideas, scoring seven straight points to send the game to a fifth and final set.

The Wolves and Scotties traded points back and forth to start the final showdown before an injury ultimately derailed Agnes Scott's chances, leaving them with only five active players.

Roquemore's career day on offense and defense was a major reason for the Scotties' resurgence on Saturday. The sophomore middle blocker hit at a .364 mark with nine kills and combined to register four of Agnes Scott's seven blocks. She also added four service aces to boot.

Tiara White (Sinton, Texas) finished a season-high 10 passes, while also setting up 11 kills of her own. Carmen Ross (Roswell, Ga.) finished with a team-high five aces.

The Scotties outhit the Wolves .162 to .082, while also outscoring them overall despite the result.

Agnes Scott finishes up the season next Saturday versus LaGrange at 2 p.m.
