Box Score 2 The Agnes Scott volleyball team traveled to the Greensboro Invitational this weekend for a four match stint. Day one started with a 3-0 loss to Piedmont College followed by a 3-1 loss to host Greensboro. The Scotties will face Guilford and Hollins tomorrow at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. respectively.
"I am very proud of our Scotties. The team has improved with every match" remarked head coach Catherine Geerlings. "Our defense was outstanding, allowing our setters to connect with our hitters for a smoother transition game. I look forward to continued improvement tomorrow."
Agnes Scott's record fell to 0-3 after a 3-0 loss to Piedmont College today. The Lions swept all three sets 25-14, 25-12 and 25-15. Piedmont finished last season with a record of 28-9 and was selected to finish second in the USA South in this year's Preseason Coaches Poll.
Junior Natali Rendon made contact with 16 attacks and four kills. First-year Bonnie Derks had 12 attacks and four kills. Sophomore Kayleigh McCrary also had 12 attacks and three kills. First-year Paige LaMore also made contact with two kills, senior Lauren Aikens and junior Shakirah Dodson added two kills apiece and sophomore Lexus Travis contributed one. Libero Shelli Sherman had 12 digs. Dodson had 12 assists with first-year Alex Moses contributing five more.
Agnes Scott fared much better in their second game of the day against Greensboro College. Greensboro took the first two sets 25-23 and 25-23. The Scotties shook them off with a 25-20 win in the third set, but Greensboro came back with a resounding 25-12 to win the match 3-1.
The Scotties' attack percentage improved greatly between the two matches. Rendon had a total of 17 kills and 42 total attacks (.262) and Aikens followed closely with 16 kills and 26 total attacks (.577). Derks and Travis came out with four kills each. Sherman totaled 20 digs with another 18 from first-year Celeste Crowley. Crowley also contributed three service aces. Dodson added 13 digs along with 19 assists. Moses also made contact with 15 assists.
