DECATUR, Ga. - The Agnes Scott volleyball team used a balanced attack to sweep the visiting Huntingdon Hawks (4-10) today at the Woodruff Athletic Center. Lauren Aikens and Bonnie Derks each chipped in with 10 kills on the night, and Natali Rendon had 9 to lead the Scotties (4-11) to a straight-set sweep (25-20, 25-14, 25-22).
The Scotties also used a strong defensive effort, with four different players registering 10 or more digs on the night. Shelli Sherman led the team with 17 digs, followed closely by Rendon with 15. Celeste Crowley and Shakirah Dodson each had 10, while Dodson also contributed to the win with 26 assists.
"A lot of different players contributed this evening to this win," commented head coach Catherine Geerlings. "It was nice to see everyone working together tonight."
The first set was a back and forth affair until the Hawks held the lead at 11-9. Geerlings called a timeout, and the Scotties responded with six straight points, including 2 kills by Aikens and five service points for Sherman, racing out to a 15-11 advantage. The Scotties would hold on to take the set, 25-20.
The second set was more of the same, with the teams trading points until 10 apiece. The Scotties used another big run, this time reeling off 10 of the next 11 points, to take the lead for good at 20-11 before closing it out, 25-14.
The final set saw Rendon take control of the set early, starting an 11 point scoring run with a kill, then serving 10 straight points, including 3 service aces, to put the home team in front, 11-1. The Hawks would close to within 2 points late in the set, but the Scotties closed out the match on a kill from Aikens.
The Scotties look to continue their winning ways as they face off with Toccoa Falls College on Thursday, October 2, at 6:30 p.m. at home. Admission is free to the public.
First-Year Bonnie Derks registered 10 kills in the win today against Huntingdon.
