DECATUR, Ga. - Agnes Scott picked up two important victories on Friday afternoon at Oakhurst Park, taking down Wesleyan by scores of 4-3 and 9-5 to pick up their first two Collegiate Conference of the South victories after facing off with several of the top teams in their first few series. With the win, the Scotties (6-18, 2-8 CCS) moved up to seventh in the CCS standings. Wesleyan (1-21, 0-8 CCS) continues to search for their first conference wins of the season. The contests were part of the annual Lauren Giddings Game, honoring former Scottie athlete Lauren Teresa Giddings, who passed away in 2011.
Both contests were neck-and-neck affairs, but the difference-maker in the end was the defense of the Scotties. Several key plays in both contests were made by the Scottie defense, who committed only one error in the two contests combined. By comparison, the Wolves scattered 9 errors through the two contests.Â
In Game 1, sophomore pitcher
Bryn Greenwood pitched a complete game, finishing with only one earned run on the day, a strikeout, and no walks. She also helped her own cause at the plate, as she picked up an RBI in the 3rd inning to help the Scotties to a 3-0 lead early in the contest.
Kenzie Beaudoin and
Kyra Hornsby also had RBIs for the Scotties, including Hornsby's ground ball that sent
PresLee Hix home in the bottom of the 7th for the game-winner. Hix would score twice in the contest.
In Game 2, the Wolves struck first and raced to a 5-1 lead behind a strong 3rd inning effort when they scored all 5 of their runs in the contest.
Kyra Hornsby came on in relief in the top of the 4th and didn't allow another run for Wesleyan, as the Scotties clawed their way back into the contest. The Scottie rally began in the bottom of the 3rd with a run by
Taylor Selby off of a groundout by Greenwood to shortstop. The 4th was where the Scotties broke the game open, as
Jada Howard hit the top of the fence in left field for a double that scored
Ellie Settle.Â
Sadie McCallum then singled to score Howard and bring the contest to within one, before scoring herself from third base on a wild pitch as her headfirst dive knotted the contest at 5-5. Greenwood then followed up with two more RBIs on a double, bringing her total RBIs in the contest to 4, as the Scotties extended the lead to 7-5. In a theme on the day, the Scottie pitchers helped themselved on the day, as Hornsby singled to right field to score Greenwood for an 8-5 cushion. Hornsby would single again in the 6th to score
PresLee Hix, adding the insurance run for the final margin of victory.
Hornsby was exceptional on the mound for the Scotties, and was aided by several strong plays by the Scottie defense. She scattered 4 hits on the day, walking one and striking out two in four innings of work. On defense, catcher
Kenzie Beaudoin stopped a potential rally by Wesleyan by catching a runner stealing to end the fourth inning, and fittingly, the last out was made by Hornsby, who forced a pop out to herself to end the game.
The Scotties will once again face off with a nationally-ranked program this week, as they host #21 Emory University on Wednesday at Oakhurst Park.
