Scotties Drop Pair of Doubleheaders at Home

Two games end in extra innings as Scotties enter conference season

DECATUR, Ga. - Agnes Scott (4-8) suffered back-to-back doubleheader losses to teams from outside the region, as they first fell to Wartburg by scores of 9-0 and 7-5 (8 innings) before returning to the field on Friday and dropping two to Buena Vista, 9-2 and 13-8 (9 innings). After opening the season with strong play in the field through the first eight games, errors plagued the Scotties over the four-game stretch, as they committed 12 errors across the four contests.

In the Thursday matchup with Wartburg (3-7), Game 1 was a pitching gem by Wartburg ace, Hannah Luellen, who held the Scotties to 3 hits in the contest and struck out 5. Game 2 looked to be more of the same, as the Knights raced to a 5-1 lead headed into the bottom of the 7th inning. The Scotties would rally for 4 runs in the bottom of the frame, aided by big hits from Ellie Settle, Jada Howard, and Bryn Greenwood, who each drove home teammates to put the game even. However, the Knights would tack on two more runs in the top of the 8th inning and end the contest by holding the Scotties scoreless in the bottom of the extra frame.

In Friday's games against Buena Vista (3-9), the Scotties struggled offensively in Game 1, as Buena Vista would run out to an early advantage and coast to the win. In Game 2, the Scotties were the ones who ran out to an early lead, as they scored in each of the first five innings, racing to a 6-0 lead through three innings, before several miscues in the late stages cost the Scotties, and Buena Vista turned 6 Scottie errors into 8 unearned runs as they plated 5 runs in the top of the 9th inning to put the game out of reach, winning by a final of 13-8. The teams would combine for 10 errors in the contest as both teams struggled with consistency in the field.

Several Scotties still had outstanding performances throughout the four-game stretch. Bryn Greenwood pitched complete game losses in both extra-innings contests, throwing 17 innings over two days. Ellie Settle continued her strong freshman campaign, hitting safely in 11 of 12 contests, including a 4-for-5 outing in Game 2 of the Wartburg series. Kenzie Beaudoin ripped her first homer of the season in Game 2 of the Buena Vista series, and several players had multiple hit games for the Scotties. In Game 2 of the Wartburg series, PresLee Hix, Bryn Greenwood and Sadie McCallum all had two hits, to along with Settles' 4-for-5 outing. In Game 1 of the Buena Vista series, Taylor Selby and Kenzie Beaudoin both hit safely twice. In Game 2, Settle, Beaudoin, Jada Howard and Bella Leonardi all hit safely twice.

The Scotties will take the next week off for Peak Week, before opening conference season on March 19 on the road against Belhaven University.
