Tennis Takes Down Belhaven, 4-3

Lewinson and Pearson shine in important CCS Contest

JACKSON, Miss. - Agnes Scott picked up their first win of the tennis season on Friday, handing Belhaven a 4-3 setback on the road. With the win, the Scotties (1-6, 1-2 Collegiate Conference of the South) enter the race for a postseason birth in the conference standings, while Belhaven (1-11, 0-3 CCS) falls a game behind in the hunt for one of six playoff spots.

In the doubles, the Scotties mixed up the doubles pairings against a short-handed Blazer squad. Unfortunately for the Scotties, Belhaven was able to take wins at the top two spots to claim the doubles point.

In singles action, the Scotties picked up wins at the No. 5 and No. 6 spots via forfeit, giving them a 2-1 edge before play began. The Scotties stretched their lead to 3-1 after a quick win by freshman standout, Feliz Pearson, who easuly handled Khliyah Ford at the No. 4 spot, winning 6-0, 6-3. Belhaven would roar back with tight wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots, as Taylor Hendley fell at the top spot, falling 6-4, 6-0 to the top Blazer player, while Katherine Cox would drop a tight, 6-4, 6-3 decision at the No. 3 position. That set up an exciting finish on Court 2, as Leilah Lewinson picked up her first victory of the season to clinch the match, taking down Lillian Williams, 7-5, 6-3, to give the Scotties the 4-3 win.

The win places the Scotties in a three-way tie for fourth place in the current CCS standings, with contests remaining against LaGrange, Covenant, Piedmont and Huntingdon. The Scotties stay busy in the upcoming week ahead, with a non-conference tilt against Franklin College on Friday, April 4, before facing off with two of the top teams in the conference in Huntingdon and defending champion Piedmont.
